Joel Hicks, legendary former head football coach of the Pulaski County Cougars and member of the Virginia High School League Sports Hall of Fame, passed away Saturday morning.
May he RIP. He prowled the sidelines very effectively for many years in his trademark shorts regardless of weather. He was also a good friend and mentor to many aspiring coaches.Joel Hicks, legendary former head football coach of the Pulaski County Cougars and member of the Virginia High School League Sports Hall of Fame, passed away Saturday morning.
Wow, you ain’t kidding. That is a class act that stands alone.I posted that Coach Hicks passed away on the Salem Football Fans page and there were many nice comments, but one comment stood out that I wanted to share that showed the type of person that he was.
[I've been in football and sports for over 30 years and to this day he is the only head coach I've ever seen go into the opposing teams locker room immediately after a game to tell them how impressed he was with their play, heart, and competitiveness. Following salem's 3 point loss to pulaski in 1994 in a game salem could have won but probably shouldn't have been within 4 scores of Coach Hicks came into our locker room immediately after and spoke to us....ive never forgotten that]
