John Marshall’s Schedule

Exactly… JM beat 3A contender Hopewell by 20, 4A Hampton by 19, 6A Westfield by 35+, 2 time 5A state champs Woodside and STAB/Highland School out of VISAA Div 1. Sounds like anywhere they play someone won’t be happy. Just gotta take it until you don’t anymore.
Got it, so they play the least competitive possible come tourney time......because it wouldn't matter if they played better competition .... wow

just fyi it’s maybe 1 or 2 teams in the state that have a chance to beat JM…and they play on the big stage throughout the season. This state tourney is just them fulfilling their obligations of being a VHSL team. If they had it their way I’m sure they’d be preparing for the Chipotle Nationals next month instead
But that is the thing… if JM wanted to opt out of the VHSL in basketball, they could. Then they play whoever they want, whenever they want, and as many games as they want with no obligation to the VHSL. It’s never made sense to me why a National caliber team would play a VHSL schedule instead of a more challenging event. Only thing I can figure is to win a state trophy?

I say the boys beat Luray I know nothing shocking. Luray is a really good team and well coached but they can't compete with JM unfortunately, nobody can. Would love to see the upset.

I say CC wins the girls game. I expect Alainah Mckavish to have around 20-25. CC by 10.

I’m sure it’s not as simple as you think.

No it really is that simple. Several VHSL schools already set the precedent of leaving the VHSL in one sport but remaining for the other VHSL sports/activities. Unless JM provides another alternative reason for staying and wasting 3 weeks playing teams they beat by 50+, it’s gotta be about a state title.

Who are these other VHSL schools? I’ve never heard of this before. I don’t like implying that they’re doing this for a state title because they would literally win at every level in the state.

Bland County plays an independent football schedule ( they forfeit any post season play ) while the other sports play per VHSL and can participate in the post season play. They do not play a regular district schedule as in their other sports. They petitioned the VHSL & were granted permission to do this. They’ve done it that way the past two seasons. So it is accurate that it can be done for a single sport while others still participate as normal. There may be other schools elsewhere in VA that do this but Bland is local to my area of the state.

Hell, I'm curious. Why does Bland Co do that?

Nelson County, Rappahannock County, Park View Sterling, Bland County and I believe Manassas Park and Mt Jackson have all done it in the passed.. It’s not that uncommon.

Other than to put a trophy in the showcase and maybe another COY from the VHSL, what benefit is there for JM to play in the VHSL? They sure aren’t challenged in those post season games for 3-4 weeks. They could be playing the Oak Hills, DeMathas, Blue Ridges, etc during that span instead of 50+ point blowouts that don’t improve their players. If there is another reason(s), I’d be curious to hear it.

Just spitballing here now… does their corporate sponsor(s) want that state title for their team resume? Does Team Loaded use the “title” for recruiting? Do they only get to use the JM gym/facilities for Team Loaded if they stay in the VHSL? I have no idea if any of these are the reason so don’t get wound up…just trying to make sense of it.

You all are terribly naive if you don't believe 14-18 year old's winning a state championship is important to them. They play a tough national schedule true, but no matter how you slice it those state championship rings have meaning. Let's take some focus off of the adults for a second and remember at the end of the day these are (mostly) underprivileged kids you are talking about. Holding up that state championship trophy has big meaning to them.

Sure it does or should. No argument there. But they could be playing for championships at the schools that they transferred from instead of for their AAU team. There is a reason there is only ONE public school basketball program doing what this one does. I don’t know what it could be other than the easy state championship.

Serious question here…what do you mean by “underprivileged”? In all the posts about this over the years, I don’t recall that ever coming up. I miss something?

They have 5 of them living in a condo together in Richmond. Doesn't sound too underprivileged to me. Lol

The school is small & barely could field team. They even canceled season Two think twitter or three times in recent years. They were granted permission to play a nontraditional non district schools but in similar in size & situation such as Hurley. They even play a team of homeschooled students if I’m not mistaken schools from WV & KY. They are trying to build a stronger program after the team folded. This past season they had some close games and even won a game.

Those kids are most likely living in some form of poverty. It just is what is in Richmond city. Don't need to go much deeper. If you've ever looked at my post, I agree the VHSL should let them move up. But understanding where they come from I wouldn't take their championship opportunity away.

I get it if those kids on that team are predominantly originally from the Richmond Metro area. But I see posts where they transfer from other states and other cities. It’s not like this is a homegrown team. Or is that not correct?

That’s been the unproven consensus from a few coaches in the Richmond area. 99.9% of those coaches are guys that would argue that they lived on their zones, legally, if they were playing for them 🤣. I’ve heard that Zay Todd story that he had a crib in Short Pump (I’d rather live downtown than Short Pump 🤮), the Rose Wheeler story that he was getting paid to play for JM… It goes on and on. We all know when you’re successful, when the hate don’t work, they start telling lies. Until it’s proven, it’s just conjecture.

It’s easy to see the Dennis Parker’s’, Zay Todd’s, Rose Wheeler’s, but think about how the success helped with opportunities for the Willie Magnum’s, Demarr Mcraes’, Malachi Dark’s, Elijah Stewards’ and Lavar Allen’s’ of the world. A few of them young brothers were Gilpin Court born and raised. Real success stories.

Don’t think this is one of those Coach Carter movie situations.

They're the premier program so a couple of guys transfer in every year. No denying that. But these are majority Richmond kids. Richmond has some type of open enrollment so I'll even say they might not 100% be John Marshall zone but still definitely Richmond city.
