John Marshall has called it a year

good
best thing for every one involved

I feel so bad for those kids. Whether it was 12 or 50, those kids that put in the work, and endured a lot to be able to play the game, are being denied.

We have discussed the sad fact that it’s harder and harder to maintain a football program these days. The reasons run the gambit, but the end result is the same, more and more kids will be denied the opportunity to make the memories that football provides.

probably falling on deaf ears but other states have alternatives that still give kids the football expersience (of sorts).

When the next realignment comes around hopefully John Marshall and other schools will decide to play in their own division or region instead of playing up and against schools with 2 or 3 times their enrollment. Im not just talking about the schools from Richmond but schools through out the state of Virginia.

There is only one solution to this problem. Everybody knows what it is but it will take a big pair to do it.
JM and TJ are both half full and need to be combined. Their combined enrollment would still be a little over 1000.
Both Alumni Associations would never agree to this since both are over 100 years old....so here we are.

I like that thought. I have been thinking this for years. Kennedy and Armstrong merged in 2003, I always though John Marshall & TJ could merge and Wythe & Huguenot could merge and you would have three high schools in Richmond.

Will never happen though... not just because of the Alumni Associations but because it makes too much sense.

if you remember thay did that and RVa had only three high schools until political forces caused them to unmerge.

You are referring to the 1980's when there was Armstrong-Kennedy, Marshall-Walker(John Marshall & Maggie Walker) and Jefferson-Huguenot-Wythe?

I was around for that but I was just in elementary school at that time but from what I have learned and read in my 20 year love affair with the sport, Marshall-Walker and Jefferson-Huguenot-Wythe were pretty successful.

I think given the the times we are in both with Covid and fewer participation in football, it would do a world of good for the city schools. TJ has been good for a number of years but you add John Marshall to them and they become a threat in Class 2 or if they move up to Class 3 they are still competitive.

A merger of Huguenot and George Wythe would be beneficial for both, mostly George Wythe whose struggle to even win a game is well known.

Then that leaves Armstrong by themselves, that leaves a big differential in fairness .

they don't.
I think the last Marshall-Walker game was in the mid 80's or so, just before the new ratings scale was put in.

Does Maggie Walker play football? I don't recall them playing football since they became The Governor's School for the Gifted.
They do not offer football but they have plenty of kids there that can play the game! Those kids are actually allowed to play for their home school where they live currently

They play every sport except for football and they are quite successful at those other sports even though they play at a lower level.

I don't think the Richmond schools actually merged. I just think they combined schools for football. Then decided to go back to the way it was before.

What Richmond City schools no longer exist? I believe Maggie Walker Governor's School has experienced success in spring sports as well as cross county if my memory serves me correctly.

Kennedy HS doesn't exist any longer. A while back they tore down the old Armstrong HS off of Nine Mile Rd. and renamed what used to be JF Kennedy HS to Armstrong HS, on Cool Ln.
