KW should be the heavy favorite in this one. But KQ plays with confidence. No doubt that current KQ head coach and former KW head coach Dylan Dehart will be fired up for this one, especially after things turned out at KW. The KQ defense has been solid all year. They've only given up 46 points (53 if you count the suspended Essex game) They are definitely a scrappy bunch. But they have not come close to facing a team or an offense like that of KW. Surely they will focus on Demond Claiborne, the Wake Forest commit, who has 1400 yards rushing and 25 tds rushing and 27 total. But then you have qb Jayveon Robinson, who is starting to get D1 looks as well, and he has 860 yards rushing with 13 TDs. Start to key on the run game and Robinson, who has 11 TD passes thus far, can find a bevy of receivers such as Kavontay Hayes, Kaleb Shelton Tre Robinson, among others. The Cavs have definitely been battle tested. KQ will counter with do everything QB Malik Holmes along with the hard running of Kam Berry. When they go to the airwaves, look for 2nd team all state WR Jaden Stanley and Cameron Graham to be the primary targets. The key to this game will be the line play. KW has great size on both sides of the line. KQ has some decent size too, but nothing like what KW possesses. KQ will have to force turnovers and score off of them if they do.

I do look for KW to win, but so much credit has to be given to King and Queen as well. Just 3 years ago, they were 1-9 and broke a 28 game losing streak in that season. Since then, they've gone 8-3 in 2019 under former coach Kenny Waters, had an undefeated regular season and Region A runner up in the 2020 season, and are currently 8-0 in 2021 and have to be considered one of the favorites in Region 1A this season. Definitely not bad for a school of 180 students and the smallest football playing school in the state of Virginia.

In closing KQ hasn't beaten KW since 1990 and in my opinion, it would take a huge upset to end that on Friday night. This is a really good KQ team, arguably their best since the 1990 state championship team, but this is a KW team that also has one of, if not the best teams they've had in their storied history. It's definitely the first one with two D1 caliber athletes in the same backfield and in my opinion, Demond Claiborne just might be the best player to ever walk the halls of KW and that in itself says a lot. Good luck to both teams on Friday night. I have ties to both teams and most importantly, I want both teams to come out of this game healthy and make a playoff run in their respective divisions

I say this game will only help K&Q in the long run no matter the final score, unless a player sustains a season-ending injury. KW is among the top 3 teams I've seen come out of this area.
Just out of curiosity, who are the other teams from this area?

Here are 5 I like in no particular order:
08 or 09 Essex pretty much the same team. 08 game vs Gretna still the greatest I've ever witnessed
2011 KW
1979 W&L
1985 KW
2012 Essex
Funny that I didn't include the state title teams from KW or W&L??? Or the one from KW that blew the 2 TD lead vs Gretna. The season doesn't come to me ! may 2010?

I'll give an HM to '83 W&L simply because of their defense. One of the best in NND history. Lost on some controversy to Surry in region semis. Just looked up their worst of 2 regular season losses (to caroline) and they had special teams mistakes that gave Caroline short fields. Caroline gained just 129 yards but won 23-8. Also lost to KW 3-0 on my boy Randy Kelley's FG. This team gave up TDs in just three games! The other two were 14-6 win over Essex the other the 7-0 loss to Surry!

Yeah it was 2010 that KW blew a 14 point lead to Gretna. They were actually inside the 10 yard line, looking to go up by 21 in the 1st quarter and turned it over. That gave Gretna momentum and they ended up winning by 14

The team that won the state title definitely wasn't the best team KW had on paper, but they came together as a unit after starting 0-2. To me, the state championship game that year was the regional championship against New Kent. KW caused a turnover on New Kent's first possession and drove 30 yards to score. That 6-0 score held up, as neither team really threatened to score for the rest of the game.

The 2011 team was special too and the game they lost to Goochland is still the most heartbreaking loss I've ever witnessed, as Goochland stopped KW, 3 inches short of the goal line with under a minute to play and won 16-12.

I'd put this year's team up there with the 2011 team, and probably slightly ahead of it. This year's team will have its legacy defined in the next 6 weeks and I hope they can bring another title back to KW

Another team that comes to mind is the 96 Northumberland team. They ran the run and shoot offense, in a time that most teams didn't pass much. With Marty Magerko at QB, Eric Harcum at RB and the state champion 4x100 team at WR, that team was explosive. I think Essex beat them in the regular season when Magerko didn't play, but they bounced back to beat a Maurice Newbill led KW team, 47-26 n the regional championship, before losing to Powhatan in the state semifinals

I was on that '83 KW team...remember that game well.
Did you know that we used to call Randy "Gus The Kicking Mule"? LOL!
Randy was damn near automatic for us. Sidebar...squirrel!

That '85 Cavalier squad was frigging amazing. I just knew that bunch was going to bring Coach Brookes his first State Title. I came back home that weekend to watch them play and stood there shocked looking at the scoreboard at the end of the game.

1985 was when I started going to KW games with my Dad. My memory is a little fuzzy on that year, as I was only 8 years old, but my Dad always talked about that 85 team and how good they were.

The thing that I remember my Dad talking about was the fact that KW beat Surry 40-0 in the regular season, then Surry upset them in the regional championship, 14-7.

If I recall correctly, KW's star running back sustained a high ankle sprain either in the semifinal win or during practice the week of the Surry game. That's how I remember it, but that easily could've been another season.

David Jackson...and his ankle....I don't remember if it was during the game or the week during practice. David had set the single season rushing records at KW his Junior year, then turned around and destroyed those records his Senior year.
Scott Moore was the starting Center on that team. Kenny Waters was a DE and TE on that team (former K&Q head coach). Geez...I could go on and on name dropping.

Magerko was a heckuva QB. Surprised he never really got a chance at W&M, I guess due to his short stature. With apologies to John Lysher of KG and Larry Britton of W&L, Magerko was possibly the best QB in the first 30 years of the NND. Joe Taylor of W&L, Jeff Scott of JM, Lyn Garner of Essex and Domenik Broaddus of Essex have been some of the best this century. Stacy Tutt was a heckuva athlete playing QB at Essex and I understand he is being inducted into the UR HOF this weekend!!

The Kenny Waters on that 85 team wasn't the former KQ head coach. It was his son, who is one of my closest friends. Coach Waters is now an assistant at Essex

That's awesome about Stacy. Such a great guy and well deserved. I hope he's doing well. I lost track of him several years back

AHA!!!! That...I didn't know! I thought it was the Kenny I grew up with! LOL! I moved away so long ago, only keep in touch with just a few folks. Thanks for clarifying! That's AWESOME to know!
