I'll start
Region D.

1. Union
2. Graham.
3. Ridgeview

As I've said before, this is the year to knock off Graham in region D, it'll only get tougher for the following 3 years or so ..

I agree with those top 2 for region D and Glenvar as top for region C . I also concur with your presumption about Graham. They’ll still be a stellar team next season but the talent coming up is going to be tough.

Oops. I fixed it. I think region C may be the best region this upcoming season, overall

Region A. 1-Poquoson, 2-Armstrong, 3-Thomas Jefferson, 4-5 close (King William and Southampton). I list 5 schools here because I think this Region might actually be the best in 2025 regarding depth.

Region B. Strasburg with what they return.

Region C. 1. Glenvar. 2. Radford. 3. Appomatox, 4. Martinsville/Gretna/Floyd.

Region D. 1. Graham, 2. Union, 3. Ridgeview/Lebanon/Gate City. 6. Tazewell/Central/V High.

State Semifinal Picks. The exact same as last year with Graham, Glenvar, Strasburg, and Poquoson, but all 4 can easily lose their region title games to the likes of Union, Radford, Clarke, Armstrong/KW/TJ. I think all 4 Region Title Games end up as very close games and closer than last year which were all routes (all 4 games). If one of the 4 Region Title Winners from last year (2024) loses, I think it will be Poquoson in Region A as the most likely to be knocked off. But, no surprise if Graham, Glenvar, or Strasburg lost in their Regions either.

Yeah, in region D, I think Graham and Union are clear favorites at 1 and 2. 3 through 7 could be V- High, Ridgeview, Tazewell, Lebanon, Gate City.....

I get the joke (mental hospital in Marion, my pops used to transport patients there). Are y’all being funny or will Marion actually be good?

No. Marion should finish at or near the bottom of the SWD again.
Gotcha I remember back when I was in elementary school (the old Region IV days), Marion used to be huge. Sent us home my freshman year in basketball. Man have times changed. Miss that old SWV District with Carroll, Graham, Tazewell, Marion, Grundy, Richlands. Used to be a lot of battles when they’d play the Piedmont District teams in the Region.

In the 70s and 80s, Marion was a basketball powerhouse and won some Region IV titles and Region runner ups. Of course, Huskly Hall and tha Dawgs were always standing in the way in Region III, but Marion had some solid teams out there. My mom worked at Marion doing nursing travel (3 month assignments) for 5 summers in a row. She worked at the state criminal part of the hospital. Marion State Hospital back then (don't know if it does now) has a regular mental health side ran by the VA Dept of Health and it has a criminal side (for the criminally insane) that is ran by the VA Dept of Corrections. She told me stories and when the Hannibal Lector movie came out, she told me she could identify with that, lol

Yes. I was in school when the old SWD was Graham, Richlands, Tazewell, Lebanon, Abingdon, V-High, John Battle, Marion, Grundy and Patrick Henry. I think Carroll was added a little after my time and then left. But I do recall Marion having some very good basketball teams. They always seemed to have a "scrappy" football team that was really competitive, although they didn't make the playoffs a lot, you were in a dogfight when you played them because they were hard nosed and hard hitting. Of course, you were in a dogfight with the SWD teams every year because of the physical style of play.

Wasn't G.City Devils in there also?

Yes, I believe they were.
This is what I believe to be correct way back when.

1970-1979: Abingdon, Gate City, Graham, Grundy, John Battle, Marion, Patrick Henry, Richlands, Tazewell, and Virginia High.

1980-1985: Abingdon, Gate City, Graham, Grundy, John Battle, Lebanon, Marion, Patrick Henry, Richlands, Tazewell, and Virginia High.

The district has undergone a lot of changes over the years since then.
