Let's hear some chatter about this game this Friday. King William comes in at 3-1, with their loss being to 3A Goochland. Since then, they've steamrolled 3 straight opponents, including a 58-19 victory over Washington and Lee last Friday night. In that game, King William was without the services of all state RB, Demond Claiborne, but proved they aren't a one man show. QB Jayveon Robinson accounted for 7 TDS in that game (4 Rushing and 3 Passing) While the offense gets the attention, their defense is big, fast and physical. Not to be forgotten, they have a tremendous coaching staff. Not every team has the luxury of having a Hall of Fame caliber and state champion coach in Patrick Kane in the press box.
Northumberland comes in ranked #2 in 1A and a 4-0 record, with one of those being a forfeit win. In their 3 games played on the field, they've outscored their opponents 172-0. However, those three opponents only have one win combined and that was from Lancaster beating Mathews. I haven't seen the Indians play this fall, but I did see them against King and Queen in the spring. In that game, their defense had lots of trouble stopping KQ and no doubt they've not played against a player the caliber of Claiborne of KW. But on the other hand, KW hasn't faced an athlete like Cameron Seldon before either. Northumberland will need others to step up to take the pressure off Seldon, in order for them to be successful in my opinion. Also, how will they react to being tested for the first time this season? I'm sure they will be pumped up and they have the home field advantage, so that plays into their favor, but this KW team has one goal in mind and that's a state championship in December. This group has played together for years and are extremely close, on and off the field and feed off of each other. I look for the size and overall team speed to play a major factor in this one.
I'd love to hear other's thoughts on what is shaping up to be a huge game in Heathsville on Friday night
