Riverheads took an easy three-set victory tonight over Cumberland, winning 25-7, 25-12, 25-15. They led the entire way except for a 1-0 Dukes lead in the final set.
With the win, RHS will now host the Region B title game Wednesday night against Altavista. That surprises me because I had assumed that perennial power Rappahannock County would prevail in the other semi-final. But apparently the Lady Colonels made the most of their longggg trip up north and pulled the upset.
Both teams (Riverheads and Altavista) will now advance to the state tournament by virtue of tonight's wins. However, Wednesday night's game will not only determine who wins the regional crown but who gets to host Saturday night's state quarter-final. Wednesday's winner will get to host the Region A runner-up, whereas the team that loses Wednesday will have to make a long trip to play the Region A champ.
As usual, there is no point in my trying to impress you guys with my extensive knowledge of dings and pings and clangs and bangs and kills and spills and all that other stuff, so I will simply explain that Riverheads was the more sound team fundamentally and easily controlled each set. However as the scores indicate, the Lady Dukes did improve slightly as the match wore on.
If there was a disappointment tonight, it was the lack of a vocal home crowd or student section. So let this be a challenge to get the group together and let's have an atmosphere Wednesday befitting a regional championship match!!!
