RNK LYN Dan Top 10

So, we recently updated our Top 10 teams for Boys Basketball in the area. Stuck to public only. Pound for pound. A lot of bickering went on back and forth getting this list together last night. But we want your input. Agree, or disagree? How would you rank them?

1. GW-DANVILLE
2. Northside (Pope episode out 02/05)
3. Gretna
4. Salem
5. Carroll County
6. Liberty Christian
7. E.C. Glass
8. Alleghany (just lost to FC)
9. Floyd County (just beat 8)
10. Appomattox

RV: Halifax, PH Roanoke, William Fleming, Rustburg

Look at more than records. Appomattox and Gretna would be crushed by WF and PH. Also Liberty Christian is not public. Not as bad a Dave Walls' rankings, his are atrocious.

Looking forward to GW/Northside matchup next Wed. Kudos to both teams for setting this one up.

On a side note, Northside, PH, WF, & Cave Spring are generally the 4 best public school basketball programs in the Roa area. For the last 3 years I've been going to a lot more games. I find it curious why Northside/PH & WF/Cave Spring don't play at least 1 regular season game against one another? (It hasn't happened the last 3 years TMK) Every year wouldn't be an even matchup, but most years these would be very good games, and bring in good crowds too. So why isn't this a thing? Great matchups for future Adam Ward or Chance Harmon classics.

Maybe an enterprising AD could get a new day tournament started: The City/County Classic perhaps? Northside/PH, CS/WF, WB/NC, Glenv/RC, HV/FC, Salem/LB. An annual classic matching up area teams that don't get a chance to play one another.

Your boys also look pretty good this year. Only 2 Ls to a very good Northside team. We featured Cam Boles and Brown in some of our videos. Kids can really play!

Danville is struggling right now. I’m hopeful they can get it turned around. Believe it or not, Dan River and Gretna may be the best overall teams in the Danville/Pittsylvania County area. Gretna has a big one coming up with nationally ranked and #1 in the state of NC, Reidsville. I think Glass and Northside are by far the area’s best teams, especially after Glass beat Northside and Albemarle.

Yeah I was wondering what was up with GW. Seems like they have the best talent, but their last few games have been head scratching as far as box score goes since the Spotswood game. They did hand it to Tunstall by 20 in that stretch. But we will be at that Northside/GW game. Should be a fun one. Glass should definitely move up for sure in this list. We'll fight it out tonight. Lol

GW has been dealing with a flu bug the past week.
I was curious what was going on with GW because I was at the game last night against Martinsville and GW looked sloppy. I will be traveling to the Northside game next week as well. Would like to see if they can play as a cohesive unit as they did earlier in the season.

The flu may have “affected” play for 1 or 2 games but GW hasn’t looked good since they lost to Spotswood. Few players have already quit including their 6th man LJ Warren. They are not a top 5 C4 team at the moment.

All due respect, GW isn’t better than most of those teams below them bro. Dan River, LCA, Glass, Salem, and even Glenvar (they’d have trouble stopping Dawyot) are better teams. If Dan River continues to play to their potential, I’d put them behind Glass and Northside. I think they have a legit shot to see John Marshall in the C2 championship game.

Definitely going to have another shake up. GW didn't even look like a top 10 team in the area. That was a statement last night.

I agree, Dan River does have a legit shot to make it to Richmond.

A little bit off topic but does anyone know what VHSL doesn't post weekly basketball ratings like they do for football? Would be nice to see where teams stand for playoff purposes with the season winding down. I know not every region uses the ratings, but give us something.
Agreed

Here are the records that MaxPreps has listed for each Reg D team. IDK how accurate these are, and IDK how the points work for basketball, but for what it's worth...

Handley (18-0)
Glass (17-3)
GW (17-3)
Salem (16-4)
Charlottesville (13-9)
Millbrook (12-7)
Halifax Co (12-9)
Orange Co (11-10)
Mecklenburg Co (11-7)
Sherando (10-8)
James Wood (10-9)
Jefferson Forest (8-12)
Liberty Beal (6-11)
Blacksburg (4-15)
Amherst Co (1-18)

1 week of games left, plus district tournaments

I’ve seen the top 4 and I’d go Handley, Glass, Salem and then GW. Charlottesville is going to be scary at that 5 seed. Andre Dawkins will hsve them ready.

For basketball 4D goes by record. Also have it split into northern and southern subregions. Handley will be the 1 seed in the north, glass/danville/salem 1 in the south. I think top 4 of each sub region make it. Maybe top 5. Think they made a change from last year and added an extra team, but I could be mistaken.

We hope to have the VHSL back on soon and we can ask this. We had him on during Football season. Would like to have a few questions from here to ask him.

So we have computer Rankings up and running now. These are just the teams we have covered in our TOP 10 (RNK, LYN, DAN) or prospects we featured.

Now, we’re at the mercy of data uploaded to Maxpreps which we all know can be wrong, but this takes into account overall winning pct, win quality, avg scoring margin, win pct over last 10, SOS, and rd/neutral/home adjustment.

-overall win percentage 30%
-win quality 20%-avg scoring margin 15%
-last 10 win percentage 15%-SOS 10%
-Rd/neutral/home adjustment 10%

Win quality is a point total based on (quad 1 wins x4) + (quad 2 wins x3) + (quad 3 wins x2) + (quad 1 wins x1) - (losses to teams <.500), where quad 1 teams are ranked 1-50 in state, quad 2 are 51-100, quad 3 are 101-150, and quad 4 are 151-200.

Average scoring margin = (PF-PA)/total games
Road/neutral/home adjustment = (road wins x 0.05) + (neutral wins x 0.03) - (Home loss x 0.02)

A lot more information if you are interested! We are going to post a video with an explanation of it all soon. Any questions or teams you would like to see, just let us know.
