Riverheads gained a bit of revenge for Tuesday's loss in the boys' game as they rolled over the Lady Blue Devils tonight. The Big Red will now advance to Friday's regional semi-finals, where they will take on Surry County. Win or lose, they play again Saturday and then advance to the state tournament next weekend.
The Gladiators were led, as they have been all season, by the senior quartet of Christa Arehart (12 tonight), Macey Snyder (11), Emma Casto (10), and Blake Bartley (10.) You cannot get much more balanced than that!
The game started with an impressive shooting display on the part of both teams, as they combined for an amazing seven three-pointers just in the first quarter. The Devils hit their first three from long range to forge an early 9-9 tie but they soon cooled off, and RHS got a pair of treys from Arehart and Snyder and quickly assumed command of the game. After that early tie, the Gladiators got their running game going as well and they closed out the first quarter on a 15-1 run to lead 24-10 after one.
The pace slowed down considerably in the second quarter, but RHS was still able to pad the lead, as the teams went to the locker room with a 34-14 score and the matter pretty much settled. The Gladiators were controlling the boards easily, giving themselves second and third chance scoring opportunities, whereas Mathews lost its early shooting touch.
The Gladiators scored the first six points of the second half to lead 40-14 before Mathews went on a 9-0 mini-run. But Snyder killed that momentum with her third triple of the game and the Gladiators coasted from there.
On paper, Friday's match with Surry appears to be a tall order, but the Gladiators might be one of those teams that is peaking at the right time, and you can bet these seniors will want to make the most of the rest of the ride.
