Lake Taylor was on its third contest in the last 10-calendar days when matching up against Phoebus on Tuesday night.

The Titans won their previous two contests, but had to score 107 points in order to do so. On Thursday night, Lake Taylor only needed 21 points to knock off the undefeated Phoebus Phantoms and did so utilizing the running game to their benefit. Over the last two games, Malik Newton has been the work horse for the Titans accumulating over 500 yards on the ground and five touchdowns. He was able to add 84 more yards to his season total splitting the load on the evening with Dominic NcNair and Jeff Foster.

The Titans held the Phantoms to a season low of 17 points and made starting quarterback Chris Daniels virtually nonexistent on a 3-of-21 day for 75 passing yards and one touchdown. Most of Daniels passes that missed the mark for his wide receivers were overthrows, but were mostly due in part to outside pressure produced by Corey Holloway. Lake Taylor was able to come away with a 21-17 over the Phantoms after Jeff Foster produced the go-ahead touchdown for the Titans with just :17 seconds left in the fourth frame.

“Phoebus is a really good football team and it was a really good football game,” Coach Hank Sawyer stated. “We knew it would be, but then would thought it would rain and things would get sloppy. This is our third game in 10 days and we’re glad to have overcome that. Maybe now can get some rest and then get back into the weight room so we can learn some more football.”

Phoebus received a gift on the Titans opening drive of the evening when Corey Wilson stepped in front of a Jeff Foster pass and went 23 yards down to the Lake Taylor two-yard line. One play later, Jaylen White was able to put the ball in the end zone to give Phoebus a 7-0 lead. Lake Taylor would go on to fumble their next possession away, but put it all together near the end of the first quarter.

After a Phoebus punt, Dominic McNair knotted the score for the Titans on a 40-yard touchdown run. Lake Taylor would go up two scores near the end of the second quarter when Jeff Foster plunged into the end zone from two yards out for his first score of the evening. Phoebus matched the Titans on its next possession when Chris Daniels connected with Barry Hargraves for a 55-yard touchdown strike before halftime. Scoring would bypass the third quarter and resume in the fourth quarter when Anthony Wallace put Phoebus up by three by way of a 27-yard field goal with 3:04 left in the contest.

Jeff Foster received the ball with just enough time to will the Titans downfield and put the go-ahead touchdown on the board from two yards out with 17 seconds left. Lake Taylor received help from Malik Newton, Dominic McNair and the Phantoms secondary who contributed to the cause with a huge pass interference penalty on their final drive. The win puts the Titans at 5-0 as they’ve now won five-consecutive games to start the season.

“We’ve got a lot of work to do, but we have to get some rest and that starts with me,” Coach Sawyer said. “Three games in 10 days is almost unheard of. Through the Lord’s blessing we’ve persevered and we’re here. We know everyone is going to bring their A-game. They brought their A-game last year when Lake Taylor wasn’t that good.”

THE TAKEWAY

Phoebus: Don’t. Panic. The end of the world is not here and your season is not destroyed because you were knocked off by Lake Taylor. The Phantoms were only able to get to Jeff Foster just once on Thursday evening as opposed to getting at Darius Price five times last Saturday. This was due in part because of Foster only dropping back in behind the line of scrimmage 13 times, but it was also due in part because of how the Titans handled the Phantoms up front. Jaylen White was aggressive yet again in another positive outing, however; penalties destroyed the Phantoms. Phoebus racked 13 penalties for 105 yards on Thursday night and that’s not good.

Lake Taylor: Corey Holloway is a man amongst men. He was in the backfield more than any other defender for the Titans on Thursday night and it showed in the number errant passes Chris Daniels lobbed over his receivers’ heads. The running game got the job done with Newton rushing for 84 yards and McNair rushing for 71 yards and one touchdown. However, the passing game has got to come around for the Titans. Foster completed on 3-of-11 passes for 42 yards which won’t fly in the long run. Until then, Lake Taylor has a very good combo at running back.

UP NEXT

Phoebus: The Phantoms (2-1) will collide with Bethel (1-4) at Darling Stadium.

Lake Taylor: Granby (0-5) surprised the Titans last season with a 14-12 victory. Lake Taylor looks to get one back next week.
