The scene is set, next Saturday st 1 pm. Bird @ HSHS! For the showdown we've been waiting for!
HS manhandled Freeman tonight 58-21. This game started out like it might be tight. Freeman scored 1st. HS tied it 7-7. HS went up 14-7. Freeman tied it 14-14. about 4 minutes til halftime HS takes lead 21-14. Freeman is stopped then with less than a minute HS goes up 28-14. 28 seconds, HS recovers onside kick and hit field goal as time expired 31-14 halftime

Late in the 4th qtr, the lead ballooned to 58-14 with a running clock. Freeman scored again with about 30 seconds to play. Final 58-21

Bird game was wild. Skyhawks started out seemingly dominating as they put together a long methodical drive for their first score and then a quick strike two play drive for their second after an interception and led 14-3. A fumbled snap after Hermitage went 3 and out seemed to shift the momentum as Hermitage took over the game in the second quarter and went up 17-14. Bird Dominated the second half and overcame some crucial penalties to take a 27-17 lead with 3 minutes and change left, but a big kickoff return for the Panthers led to a score and it was 27-24 as the clock ticked down towards zero. Bird covered the onside kick attempt and a couple of first downs later it was all over. Quite an exciting game. Bird had close to no passing game and Hermitage connected on some big passes, but the real story was that Bird didn't need a passing game. McCall rushed 241 yards and 4 tds, as the Skyhawks must have rushed for well over 300 yards. Hard to do against Hermitage, for sure.

I am not saying they WILL win the state championship(8 great teams left), but I do think this game is between the two best teams in Virginia next week and the winner will be standing as the favorite to win the title.

Can't wait! Great game tonight against Hermitage. Bird controlled the game to start jumping out to a 14-3 lead behind a powerful running game. The momentum changed when Bird fumbled and Hermitage scored on a beautiful pass to Hines. Bird couldn't get anything going and Hermitage scored again to lead 17-14 at halftime. After a good kickoff return Bird scored

Can't wait! The game two years ago was a classic. This one should be too. I was impressed with the way Hermitage played without their starting QB. He played well 3TDs 2ints but had a couple of intentional grounding calls that was big. Bird's offensive line was dominant. I think the running back McCall had his best game last night and most guys do not want to try and tackle him in the 4th quarter. I was sitting around Hermitage fans and they don't think Bird has a chance against the Springers too much speed. Bird needs to control the game with the run game, if they are consistently in third and long it will be a long night. The passing game struggled but they need to complete a few to keep the defense honest. Limit the holding and chop block penalties. They are drive killers. Bird has trouble defending when you spread them out. There is no stopping Carter but hopefully they can contain him. Bird defense is very good but they haven't faced an offense like this. Maybe they can watch the Meadowbrook film to see what worked

It should be a great game! HS also has a real good power run game! With that massive offensive line, they have controlled the line of scrimmage in every game (games 1,2,and 3 were very shakey) since game 4 of the season. They have so many different talented play makers, it's very hard to key on anybody. You stop the run, they will pick you apart with the pass. Slow the pass, they will run right over you! That's the offense. The Springer defense, they are fast and strong.
This is going to be a showcase game. I think the winner of this game will be the State Champion.

Last year when I was there for Highland Springs-Indian River I was about the 25 nearest the scoreboard. I'll look for you though.
Dan, you gonna give the Generals some love on Friday night? Lake Taylor is coming to town. Should be a sound matchup as well. If you are afraid to drive down DP can send his limousine.

Thanks for all you do for Metro Richmond football fans. It is appreciated.

I wish the 5A board was as active as the 4A board. A shame to have huge match ups each week that for the most part go un-debated.

Really torn on this one. HS is so explosive but Bird has a way of finding victory against those type of teams. HS is big enough to make it harder for Bird to play Bird-ball. At the same time... it will be tougher to find time to pass consistently for HS with those 2 linebackers and DE Bird has.

Not sure who I am picking yet.

It was leaking about a quart of oil every 10 yards. I may have to drive the Pinto!

The only Pinto's left are the ones you ride or eat. I pray you dont eat any before the game.

I'm gonna try. Been a few years since I've been down to Dinwiddie. Last time I went was either 2009 or 2011 when you guys played Varina. Trying to do the double dip, get down to Dinwiddie Friday and be there at Highland Springs on Saturday.

Are you insinuating that Dinwiddie is so far away that you can't get back to Highland Springs by 2:00 PM Saturday? Gee Danny, we are a little south of Richmond, but not THAT far south.

Just kidding. We hope you can make it. It should be a great game between two teams that will give it 100% for four full quarters.

No insinuations... Just trying to juggle two games in a 24 hour span between the 9-5er and not depriving the fam. I'd say it's 80% chance I'll be there Friday.

Who you picking?

I took Bird in my pickem. I think the only style that can beat HS is what Bird does. Its just a gut feeling but its really a coin flip. If HS wins I think they roll 2 a sec straight state campionship. If Bird wins I'm not so sure.

Be rooting for whoever advanves obviously as I am a Richmond homer forever.
