Lee high (Robert E Lee)

I mean Robert e lee. It’s funny. If I asked how many free throws #12 for lee high made vs. Harrisonburg in 1976, you would have 100 responses from the usually Lee lovers. But ask for info about the coach getting fired and crickets.

I'll reply with limited info. Lee's head coach was involved in a DWI arrest after he wrecked his car. He didn't hit anyone else just single vehicle...it was the night before the season opener. He has not been fired from what I am hearing...but is suspended. By that I mean his status is really uncertain. I don't know anymore than that. Lee assistant Terrell Mickens is acting Head coach for now and is not only very capable but doing a great job! He is a quality person and great leader so...no matter what happens Lee will be just fine. People make mistakes and it will play out over time.

Did I mention how many free throws #12 made in 1976 against Harrisonburg? Lol...I just hadn't seen your post. It was in the local media up here so...it's not a big secret. Lee has a bunch of resilient players and leaders so...I'm quite confident in this season ending in another deep run.

Despite the season starting late due to football season and then this...the Leemen are 3-0 heading into tonight. Coach Mickens and the players deserve credit for not letting these distractions cause them any problems.

The TNV reported in an article about Mickens that Hatcher will be off the court for an unspecified amount of time. Like you leemen that's all I have heard or read about the situation.

Here's the article....

Undaunted, ‘one of a kind’ Mickens rises to the challenge

STAUNTON - Terrell Mickens has never been one to mince words.

He’s not going to go on a two-minute rant led by a simple question.

In fact, while stepping into a tough situation as Robert E. Lee’s interim boys basketball coach, Mickens has told the media he won’t be sharing any words at all.

If you know Mickens and his soft-spoken demeanor, his shyness with the media isn’t a surprise.

But one word that comes to mind with the sight of Mickens on the Leemen sidelines —natural.

With less than 24 hours to prepare for his first ever head-coaching gig following the DUI arrest of Lee head coach Jarrett Hatcher last week, it was certainly a challenge. Hatcher was involved in a single-vehicle crash last week on North Coalter Street. He was charged with driving under the influence, first offense, and will be off the court for an unspecified amount of time.

Despite the whirlwind developments that forced him to fill Hatcher’s shoes, Mickens was undaunted. And much like the up-and-unders in the low post against longer athletes, and the blue-collar work ethic he brought to the floor night in and night out as a player, his team followed suit with a 35-point blowout win to open up the season.

His voice echoed through timeout huddles as his eyes locked in on each and every player with a different message.

Suddenly the man with few words had all of the right ones for a group of teenagers who needed to hear them.

If you ask his closest friends and family, they have a wide list of words they use to describe him.

His fiance, Nicole Mueller, lists “determined,” “passionate” and “nurturing” as the three that come to mind.

Determined — proven by the fight Mickens has shown throughout his athletic career, going to JMU for football following college before eventually winding up at Bridgewater College the past two seasons.

Passionate — proven by the chest bumps and the cheers for the team during Robert E. Lee’s state championship run just a season ago.

Nurturing — proven by the love and compassion he is showing to the Leemen right now during a trying and tough time.

His sister, Angela Mickens-Johnson, listed three more — “committed,” “influential” and “achiever.”

Committed is what Mickens has proven to be in every aspect of his life, whether it’s taking college classes, playing Division III football, working at the YMCA or helping coach, he has done it all.

Influential is an understatement on what Mickens has meant to the kids within the Lee High basketball program and around the Staunton community.

Achieving is simply a lifelong trait.

When it comes to his two best friends, Taylor Flavin and Savon Robinson, they’ll explain it to you clearly — “resiliency, “whole-hearted” and “unwavering.”

The resiliency shined through after two knee surgeries almost ended Mickens’ athletic dreams. But he instead pushed his way through rehab to get back on the field.

The man’s whole-hearted nature is obvious through the dedication he puts into his daily tasks.

And unwavering is as good a word as any to describe the love, support and friendship he has provided to those around him.

Nobody knows how the coaching situation at Lee High will unfold or what Mickens has in store for his future.

If you asked me to use a word to describe him as an athlete, I’d say “gritty.”

And f you asked me to come up with a word that outlines him as a coach, I’d say “worthy.”

But if you asked me how to describe Terrell Mickens as a man?

That can’t be done with just one word. I’d use four.

“One of a kind.” And we’ll leave it at that.
