We have seen the scores all year long from both of these teams. We have seen the difference in the results when they have played mutual opponents. We already saw how Varina had their hands full with Hanover, and we just saw what Highland Springs did to that same Hanover team. I’m not sure if I can do this, but I have seen Varina play a team with similar speed(Hermitage) as Highland Springs played when they played Julius Chambers. Now,everyone seems to think, Patrick Henry will give Varina a good game, but Highland Springs just absolutely blew out the same PH team. Can someone please explain to me,LEGITIMATELY,how people think this game will be “the game of the century”? There could be some arguing in this, so let’s be nice!! But…let’s hear it! I got HSHS winning by 2 TDs!

Comparing Herm’s team to Chambers is just down right wrong and an atrocious comparison. I also haven’t heard anyone say that Varina and HS will be the game of the century. It’s definitely a big game but the rivalry lost its luster if you you ask me with Varina moving down and having no real playoff implications. I see HS either winning by 2 TDs or losing one of those 10-7 ballgames like last year. Win or lose, I still think HS will win Class 5 easily.

I will say this... I think the level of talent on both teams plus the fact both are expected to be undefeated (and should be) in addition to Varina being a defending state champion facing off against a team that many (myself included) pegged to win Class 5 back in the Spring makes this game huge.

Sure, the fact that they are both no longer Class 5 hurts the rivalry but it is still a rivalry... always has been, always will be. Fact of the matter is with Highland Springs moving up to 6 next year, even if Varina were still 5 it would lose some luster.

Definitely was not comparing the teams so much as I was comparing the speed of the skill position athletes. The line play is beyond imaginably different. I won’t even talk about the different level of coaching. As far as the “game of the century “, that is mostly been heard from the media. I admit….I’m impressed with how Varina has play defensively in the big games, but offensively,it’s been a pretty big disappointment. It’s just my opinion, but there is no way THAT Hanover team I just saw get embarrassed by Highland Springs should have been anywhere close to Varina with the hype they bring.

I definitely feel you now that you clarified. Herm isn’t on that speed level as Chambers and I’m a Herm homer so to speak. Herm was much faster last year and still wasn’t on that level. HS and Stone Bridge are hands down the best coached teams in Virginia and I don’t see any let downs this year for the Springers. They are legit and I don’t think Varina is on that level.

A lot of Varina fans were disappointed in the way the offense played against Hanover but I looked at it very different, Hanover scored with 9 minutes left in the game and made it 12 to 14 Varina,Varina got the ball back with 9 minute left in the game drove 70 some yards scored and only left a minute and some seconds on the clock to secure the win. I think doing crunch time they do put it together. I really don't compare scores because some teams match up better than others and some teams play down to there opponents. Like the varina game Friday night varina did not play there starters the second half. I would love to see both teams go into the playoffs undefeated but that's not going to happen. To me and this is just my opinion my focus would be going undefeated in the playoff and that means a state championship good luck to both teams and I Hope everyone comes out injury free.

Keep in mind that Varina-Hanover game was played on short notice. Hanover called mid-day after Varina inquired multiple times about moving the game due to weather. If played under different circumstances, maybe you don't see as close a game. Pure speculation, Doc Brown or Marty are not stopping by my house in a DeLorean anytime soon.

I would love to see this game moved to a larger location each season. Maybe VUU or VSU if they are on the road those weeks. This thing will be sold out by Tuesday of game week.

Heck, maybe even City Stadium. I don't even know if they have in-ground supports for goalposts anymore.

Great and reasonable idea but they wouldn’t ever do this. I’ve heard several times that HCPS would never move one of their games into the city of Richmond. As soon as the new arena in VCC is open, they won’t even be coming into the city for graduation.

I don't blame them! The City of Richmond is a nightmare to park (if you're not parking in a parking deck). I don't go in the City for anything unless I absolutely have to!

All facts! Love RVA, but parking is nothing but a money grab. The parking police are vultures and pray on the disabled and college students. It’s atrocious.

A lot of people don’t know this, but when Highland Springs played Varina a few years back at Herm, the HS and Varina admin wanted at least one of those games to be played at Henrico. Because Henrico is so close to the city limits, the higher ups in HCPS overrode the decision and made them play at Herm. Don’t know the history, but Richmond is just a no no when it comes to HCPS.

Very well said and insightful. Good for Henrico.

I have an idea…. increase the seating to 8,500 seats at both schools. Highland Springs already seats 8,500. So do the same to Varina. There is plenty of room on the visiting side at Varina to be able to increase the seating capacity PERMANENTLY! The west end of Henrico county already has Hermitage stadium which will hold at least 5,000 people. I know Glen Allen has a giant stadium, but I don’t know how many their stadium will hold. Tucker just built a new stadium but I think their stadium only holds 4k.

Glen Allen’s stadium is probably the second smallest after Deep Run in the county. Freeman is probably in that same conversation. Herm, HS, and Varina are the largest.

How big is the new stadium tucker just built? His biggest issue with the stadiums is the size of the visiting teams stands, and when it comes to playoff games those stands need to be equal the size of the home side.

I was just over there. Their home side looks similar to HS's. The visitor's side is much smaller...probably the same as Glen Allen's.

HooSprings, where do you get that 8500 figure? That is a huge high school stadium. I did a Google earth search against several other high school fields and Segra Field in Loudon (seats 5000). I just don't see how HS can possibly seat that many. Maybe if both visitor and home stands ran the full length of the field, but they don't. Just curious if you have an official figure or that is a back of the envelope estimate.

I got the numbers directly from the AD. He requested a stadium that large to be able to accommodate for any type of big games including state playoffs if needed. The visitor side is noticeably larger than any other stadium in RVA. They have already had three games since the stadium was built with over 7000 tickets sold. It still has not sold out yet!

I think they are counting the standing areas as well. Looking at the stadium it doesn't appear to hold that many. Looks on par with William Fleming

I don’t think HS holds 8,500. Herm holds right around 5,000. 8,500 is A LOT. To put things in perspective, Salem Stadium holds a little over 7,000. HS’s stadium isn’t anywhere as big as Salem’s.

If attending a HS football game required listening to their Hall Watcher Type announcer, I am out! (the play play guy is great) Her regular game interruptions bring the whole experience at the Springer Games down from a 8-9 out of 10 to about a 3 for me!! I've been to 2 gsmes so far. I won't back until Smith & HS get together for what should be regular Class 6 Reg A finals games starting next year.

Glad you said it. It does feel like an elementary school field day event. Just a little too much going on.

Too funny. I never thought of it like that, but it's true. To be honest, it's not only annoying her tone tends to belittle grown folks. With her over bearing personality I can't believe people work for her.
The Hall Watcher lady that did that has been replaced! They GUY doing it now is much more inclined to the game instead of the children running amuck ..
