Lets say Highland Springs falls to Colonial Forge tomorrow night... is that a good or bad thing for Varina?

If the Springers lose then obviously Varina knows they are not invincible and can be beaten.

Of course if the Springers were to lose to CF I imagine the Springers will come out with a chip on their shoulder, hungry and ready to prove a point.

So lets say you are Varina, which do you want? A 1-loss Springer team or an undefeated Springers team?

For the record, I believe the Springers will be 9-0 meeting 8-1 Varina at Hermitage on the 9th.

We both KNOW....Varina wants to be the team to break HSHS’s win streak!

Question is...what would the playoffs look like if an 8-1 Varina beats a 9-0 HS?!

Well and to another point, in a different thread altogether lets say Varina does beat the Springers next week, how does a rematch play out should they meet again which would be highly possible? As I stated there, tough to beat the Springers once... a second time? That becomes much tougher.

As an interested bystander, I think a HS loss to CF would just about cement their 5th state championship. Sometimes it is better to lose a game in the regular season because it makes a team take a real good look in the mirror and stokes a fire that carries them all the way to the end. Not that HS needs that this year.

The worst thing for Varina would be to beat them in the regular season. If Varina is going to top HS, better off doing it in the playoffs for two reasons: it counts more, and beating a team twice in the same season-especially one that is arguably/probably better than you-is a very, very tall task.

My thoughts exactly.

I look for a low scoring game next Saturday. Varina will be vanilla in hopes of not giving a lot away in light of a potential first round rematch, while Springs will be focused and use this game as a playoff tune up. Neither team will lay down and Varina’s mentality is let’s beat these guys twice. Varina beat them 5 times in basketball two years ago, not one time did any player on either team take an off play. That’s just a testament of the pride on the East End.

It would probably be a 2nd round matchup. Highland Springs’ ENTIRE season has been a playoff tuneup. Varina hasn’t seen anything like HSHS since last season. IMO....hide whatever they want.

I personally don’t think it’ll be much if anything. It’s pretty much get the ball to Paige, Reid, and get their receivers into open space.

Open space against HSHS’s secondary?! This isn’t Hanover or Lee-Davis. They haven’t seen a D this good or this fast all year. HSHS has seen a far better D than Varina puts on the field.

Here we go again. God forbid anybody give another team other than HS some credit. Let’s just enjoy the next couple of weeks of football.
I’m not discrediting anyone. I’m merely stating...this SAME defense saw these players you mentioned last year, and they were well taken care of. The QB is serviceable, but most of the QBs HSHS has seen this year were comparable. A few may have been very good, but I don’t like to compare kids. We know Varina is a good team, but as you said, these kids know each other.

CF better bring their "A" plus game!! That game vs Grassfield seems like a long time ago, Week 1 but it was only a 1 score game with Grassfield driving past midfield at the end of that game. Surrat made a pick 6 on the last play of the game as the Grizzlies gave up any attempt of stopping him!

Teams will improve through the season but if the Eagles aren't mich better than they were in that game, it'll be over pretty quickly.

CF has a strong passing game with their receivers highly skilled in stem pass routes. Most are 3 -5 step & throw type plays. I expect them run the spread.

Back to Danny's original post, I believe a loss or even a scare does not bode well for Varina. HSHS might have a tendency to be a little less focused for Varina if they are not challenged by CF. But even that's a stretch, because of the rivalry.

I think Varina will come out and be a force for the first half and into the third, but HSHS's depth in nearly all positions should decide the game.

Regardless, HSHS will be a part of the two premier games for the next two weeks.

The one thing I DO know...As long as Manchester and Deep Run don’t get upset....no matter who wins Saturday...HSHS is the #1 seed win or lose and Varina will be the #4 seed win or lose! The 4 seeds are set in place as long as DR & Manchester don’t lose Friday night. HS is guaranteed the #1 seed regardless of anything else that happens in any other game. They CAN NOT be caught by anyone for the top seed!

Reading the preview of this game, and looking at the numbers....the preview is wrong...as long as no major upsets of course.
