In a game with huge implications for both playoffs and the Concorde District, Madison came back from a 14-3 deficit with a little help from the football gods and a second half drive that was one of the most bizarre I have seen in a football game.

Westfield received the opening KO and used just five plays to score on a Legall 2 yard run to open on top, 7-0 (Mattfeld XP) just one minute into the game. MAD then started at their own 36 yard line and moved to the WF 45 yard line where they faced the first of many 4th downs on the evening, 4th and 3, before Alex Jreige converted with a 4 yard run. Unable to move further, MAD punted and WF took over at the WF 43 yard line after a 32 yard punt return by WF's Anderson. WF then moved down field and scored again when Toveil ran it in from 3 yards out to extend the lead to 14-0 (Mattfeld XP) with 11:04 to play in the half. MAD then drove from their own 34 yard line and reached the WF 13 before settling for a 30 yard Sevy FG to cut the lead to 14-3 with 5:29 remaining in the half. WF then got another nice kick return, this time 30 yards from Legall, and started their next drive at the Madison 46. After a few plays WF's Toveil rolled out to his left on the short side of the field and looked to pass to the sideline, but a MAD defender got a hand on the pass and it landed squarely in the hands of MAD's Arise Jreige who had nothing but open ground in front of him for a 66 yard pick 6. After the Sevy XP it was 14-10 WF with 2:34 left in the half. On WF's next possession they quickly moved from their own 29 yard line to around the MAD 30 yard line when Legall ran a pass pattern out of the backfield down the left sideline totally open, only to have the perfect pass drop through his hands in the end zone. Time then ran out in the half.

MAD received the 2nd half KO at their 25 yard line and ran two plays for two yards to their own 27 yard line. On the second play there were three fouls called- and this is where the game became bizarre. Personal fouls on both a MAD and WF lineman, plus an unsportsmanlike conduct on MAD. After the two personal fouls negated each other, for some reason the officials walked off the penalty from the 27 to the 18 yard line, instead of half the distance to the goal and MAD was faced with somethin like 1st and 17 instead of 1st and 22. After reaching the MAD 42 yard line, MAD had a short punt and WF got the ball back on their own 43 yard line.

Note: after the above series, the play got ugly and this was the beginning of about 12 minutes lasting into the early 4th quarter that saw a penalty flag on just about every play for one team or the other, as well as multiple injuries (including four to WF players, three of whom had to leave the game).

With WF now at the WF 43 yard line, after just a few plays WF's St. Germain and MAD's Hurley simultaneously came down with a Toveil pass but the ref ruled it an interception at the MAD 40 yard line. MAD's drive then moved about 20 yards before MAD faced a 4th and 3 at the WF 40 - but WF jumped offsides. MAD faced another 4th down, this time 4th and 13 at the WF 44 and threw a short pass into the flat that was met by a WF defender about 7-8 yards short of the marker, but the ref behind the play threw a flag for a facemask (photo evidence later showed the MAD player grabbed his own facemask). Drive continues. MAD then faced a 4th and 10 at the WF 25 but Barry threw a nice pass to Eldridge for 17 yards and MAD was on the WF 8 yard line. Facing the fourth 4th down on this drive, 4th and goal from the one yard line, MAD was hit with an illegal procedure call and decided to settle for a 24 yard Sevy FG to cut the WF lead to 14-13 with 8:28 remaining in the game. WF's Legall then returned the MAD KO 35 yards to the WF 45 and after three plays WF was faced with a 4th and inches at the MAD 45, where MAD's defense stuffed the run and MAD took over on the MAD 45 yard line. MAD punted on this drive and WF took over with about 4:20 to play and with one or two first downs could run out the clock for a huge win, but they failed to execute and punted after three plays to give MAD the ball on the MAD 49 yard line with about 3-1/2 minutes to go and trailing 14-13. MAD then executed a crisp 51 yard drive and scored when Barry ran it in from the one with 1:35 to play, After Alex Jreige ran the ball on the 2XP attempt and despite being stopped at the goal line managed to lunge forward to convert, MAD now led 21-14 with 1:35 to play. WF was unable to score in that time and MAD won the game to put themselves securely in the driver's seat for a top playoff seed in Region D.

Quick correction... The Warhawk interception was by #8 Justin Williams, Anise Jreige graduated last year.

Interested in why you characterized the winning(?) drive as "bizarre" relative to all the other stuff in the game. I agree Westfield "should" have been able to run out the clock with 4 minutes left... they had no problem with that the beginning of the night. Couple of Warhawks starters were out or went out (lineman Johnstone, receiver Wyka).

Lastly, an observation... o-line and d-line play shifted toward Madison late in the game as Westfield appeared to be worn down... Madison's line was getting better leverage in various situations.

Sorry, I did not have a real roster and used MaxPreps. Apologies to Mr. Williams.

Bizarre to describe the third quarter mostly. So many penalties and the Madison drive was helped numerous times by Westfield mistakes, but that drive was not the one that won it for them. The winning drive was, by far, the best drive by either team all game. Agree that line play shifted to the Warhawk's advantage. I don't think it was a well played game by either team, but Madison did what they needed to win. Westfield has been able to jump out on teams early, but then the offense stalls for some reason. It has happened in each game now.

Yeah... the MaxPreps website for a lot of the NoVa teams still has last year's rosters. The individual school athletics sites I have found to be more current.
