Madison dominated the game on both sides of the ball and totally stymied the Westfield offense except for one drive that reached the red zone but ended in a missed FG try.

MAD started their first drive at their own 43 yard line and methodically moved downfield to open the scoring on a 1 yard Barry run to jump out in front 7-0 (Sevy XP) with 6:09 to play in the first quarter. WF's next possession began on their own 16 after a penalty on the KO but they went three and out. A sort punt gave MAD great field position on the WF 42 yard line. After three plays MAD faced a 4th and 2 at the WF 34 yard line, but a 2 yard carry by Alex Jriege kept the drive alive and MAD went on to score on a one yard Alex Jriege run to extend the lead to 13-0 (bad snap on the XP attempt) with 2:06 to play in the first quarter. WF then went three and out again. MAD started their third drive of the night on their own 45 yard line and reached the WF 18 yard line where they again converted a 4th down attempt, this time a 4th and 2 where Alex Jriege gained just enough. MAD did not reach the end zone on this drive, but did get a 28 yard Sevy FG to extend the lead to 16-0 with 5:54 remaining in the half. WF then went three and out for the third consecutive possession, followed by MAD's first punt of the game. WF returned the favor and punted again to give MAD the ball on their own 40 yard line with around a minute left in the half. After a long Barry pass into double coverage where MAD's Endicott came down with the ball, MAD's Sevy kicked a 36 yard FG as time expired to go into the half leading 19-0.

WF took the second half KO and managed to put together a good drive using some different personnel than normal on offense, but once they reached the MAD 10 yard line the MAD defense held and got an important sack to stop the drive. WF's Mattfeld attempted a 34 yard FG but the attempt was wide right. MAD then started their drive and ate up the clock before reaching the WF 3 yard line at the end of the third quarter. MAD's Angelo Jriege then punched it in from 1 yard out to extend the MAD lead to 27-0 (Carlson 2XP run) with 10:08 to play in the game. WF's next drive started on their own 16 yard line, but WF's Johnson was intercepted by MAD's Hurley on the WF 30 yard line when he jumped the route . After the return and a WF penalty on the return, MAD was on the WF 9 yard line. They went on to score once again, this time on a 3 yard Kustra run to go up 34-0 (Sevy XP) with 6:10 remaining in the game. WF's final drive ended with a punt, followed by MAD running out the clock.

SPL311U, I assume you were there. Are you a MAD photographer (I thought you were)? I tried to find you to say hello but could not. WF is down, but that does not take away what MAD did tonight. Very well played and you should have another deep playoff run this fall.

I am, but for cheerleading, and while at the game I take some of the football team as they play (up in the stands at the 50 yd line). The Endicotts are the football team photographers (their son Sonny had a couple of plays tonite).

I thought going to the heavy run package with defensive players St. Germain (#87) at FB and Smith?? (#49) at RB was a smart move down 19-0... #49 had a few dings playing both ways. The Westfield QB didn't seem to have much called for him in a passing game, just a little bit to keep Madison honest. Also, the whole whistle, redo the first Madson touchdown play was just weird...

That is a new thing for WF, installed two weeks ago against South Lakes. The TB you mention was the MLB, Yaokouame (#49). The FB was Owens (#97) who is normally one of the DEs. St Germain (#87) plays TE but often plays DE as well. They add their best 3-4 defenders (adding LB Keys, #22) with size and try to pound the ball but they cannot do it for long because the defenders going both ways just get worn out. Plus, against a good team after falling behind, like tonight, it is hard to keep that up.

Thanks for the names, I couldn't distinguish 87/97 from the angle I was at...That approach can work against Chantilly and Centreville as it did give the Warhawks defense some fits. We had Hurley going both ways for a couple of series because of his breakaway speed (defended well, BTW).

Westfield is going to need to figure something out in a couple of weeks against Centreville. Isaiah Ragland is the real deal at RB, cannot let him get too far the second level because he has break away speed or it will be a long night.
