Madison Comeback Nets State Championship

The Madison Warhawks won the 6A State championship in dramatic fashion with a come from behind 6-5 win over Chantilly. Matt Favaro's walk-off single to center with the bases loaded helped Madison overcome a 2-run deficit.

The comeback started with a line drive single from Jimmy Goldsmith to right field. Carlos Alfano and Bryan Harthum both reached base on bunts to load the bases.The count reached 0-2 for Favaro before he sent the next pitch to the center field fence to give the Warhawks the state championship.

Madison had their own selves to blame for the five runs in the 4th inning. They committed five errors in the inning and Chantilly sent 11 batters to the plate. RBI singles by Matt Padaway, Andrew Kim, and Brett Norwood gave the Chargers a 5-3 lead.

The Warhawks kept chipping away at the Chantilly lead scoring runs in the 5th and 6th innings to tie the game at five, Kyle Novak doubled in Owen Socher who reached on and error and Joey Goldsmith scored on a sacrifice fly by Pete Nielsen after also reaching on an infield error. Both runs were unearned.

Nielson replaced Navaro in the 4th inning and sat down 10 of the 12 batters he faced to get the win. He allowed only a single in the 6th inning and a walk in the 7th inning while striking out one.

Chantilly starter Forrest Wagner was chased after facing only six batters. He walked Jimmy Goldsmith and left after giving up singles to Alfano and Harthum to load the bases. Favaro had a sacrifice fly to score the 1st run and Jordan Ebersole delivered a 2-run single for a 3-0 lead.
