MC baseball is usually an afterthought. Softball gets all the pub in the spring (deservedly so). But about every 3-4 years, baseball makes a deep, improbable playoff run.
I think it was 2008 or 2009, they lost in the state semis to the eventual champ. Then three years or so later they lost to a loaded Va. High team in the the state semis. The Bearcats then beat Strasburg in the finals. In 2017, they lost to Dan River in the semis. DR beat John Battle in the finals.
Why this post? In those runs, Madison never finished .500. They had not so good regular seasons but came on late each year. They never won the Region in those runs.
This year, they stumbling along and looked like a team ready for the season to end. But all of a sudden, they are the hottest team in the Bull Run!
They have had two pitchers step up ( a junior and a freshman). They beat top dog Central Woodstock on Tuesday behind a 2 hit effort on the mound by the junior. Then last night, the freshman threw a complete game 3 hit shutout at Clarke County. Clarke was supposed to be the cream of the crop and challenge Page in the Region. They have hit like 15 homers so far. But not last night. No Eagle got past second base.
MC starts 3 freshmen, one sophomore, 3-4 juniors and 1-2 seniors (depends on who is pitching).
Don’t be surprised if these guys show up in the post season this year and knock off a few teams.
And look out next season. They should be in the mix...even with Page, East Rock, Luray and stonewall entering the Bull Run.
