Looks like Liberty will have 2 great matchups next week. Analysis on this matchup?

The most critical item is Lafayette's QB right wrist in the 3rd Q. He did not return but was on the sideline. Status: unknown right now.

Lafayette, I hope he is ok. It would be a shame for this young man to be injured and not be able to play at 100%. When the teams get to the championship game it is only right that both teams be injury free, line up and play and let the best team win. Good luck to him, hope he's a quick healer and a safe trip to Lynchburg next week. Hope Warrior nation shows up strong next week!!

I would bet he plays with a cast but how close to 100 % he will be us a question. If I was a coach (I am not!) I would start him on defense as he starts there also and play his back up who is experienced at QB. But as I said I would be surprised if he does not start at QB. In 2009 our neighbor school Bruton had their star player go on the state final with a similar cast. In our offense he passes about 6-7 times a game and runs about 10 times.

I will be there unless life on earth ends! I haven't bother to see who the home team is ( doesn't really matter) but I am sure Magna Vista will bring more fans so let them have the home side. We won in 2001 from the visitor side anyway. Knowing the QB toughness and a Senior in a State Championship game he will be playing with a cast like Brutons Talliferro did in 2009 ( he is now a Baltimore Raven ). I am not sure how a fractured wrist in a cast affects passing though.

My concern would be taking the snaps and handing it off with the cast. I like your defense-only idea.

There are different types of casts for the injuries that could be suffered in the wrist area. For example about 7-8 years ago we had a QB that had "fractured" his wrist and was casted up by the local docs. He was unable to play with it and was slated to be out for most of the season. Our second QB, hurt his knee in the opening game of the year and we took him to UVa to have it looked at. On a whim we grabbed our fractured wrist QB and brought him along to get checked out by Doc M as well. Well the knee QB was out , torn ligaments, but the wrist QB was diagnosed and discovered that he was in the wrong kind of cast for his injury. The docs at UVa changed his cast and he started the next week for us. We ran a spread offense and he could throw with this cast. Just saying, I don't know the injury to the Lafayette QB, but a cast doesn't automatically mean he can't do some of the things that QBs do.
Hopefully both team will be at full strength and it will be a good game.

Thanks for the info- hopefully our Docs are up to UVA standards! After the injury he wore a latex wrap around support that was about 8 inches long and his hand seemed ok.

Wing-T/Double Wing/Flexbone

Looks like a combination of those from what I've watched. They are very good. Don't get a lot of credit because not many bay rivers posters up here. I've watched them throughout the year, they've got athletes and they are physical. Magna Vista better bring it or they'll take an L. If both teams bring their A-game, I've got Magna Vista 34 Lafayette 27. I don't see this game being a runaway. This might be the first time in a long time that all 6 state championship games will be competitive. Unless a team just doesn't show up or completely losses focus and lets it get out of hand.

Re: Wing-T/Double Wing/Flexbone

I would be shocked if anyone scored 34 points on Lafayette 's defense. I saw very limited film on MV on max preps and they looked somewhat like Petersburg in their offense.

Re: Lafayette Offense ???????

Variations of the wing T. They have 4 solid runners, a couple of excellent receivers, a veteran offensive line and very physical on both sides of the ball. The team has excellent speed as all 4 playoff teams will attest to. WA 14 4th Q points are the most we have given up in 2 months. Game is noon at Liberty.

Re: Lafayette Offense ???????

I saw Lafayette play someone about 3 or 4 years ago. cannot recall who.

Never saw a fractured or even sprained wrist that did not require immobization to heal but I believe your story. I'm no Doctor but have seen and had more than my share of Spot's injuries. Just seems to me it will be tough to get a Doctor to give permission to play such a contact related sport as Football with a wrist fracture, if that was indeed the diagnosis. But again, I'm no Doctor.

Magna Vista is more prepared based on schedule

Just in the last 3 weeks MV has played Monticello, Northside and James Monroe. All three are better than any team Lafayette played all year. I'm not trying to downplay Lafayette with that statement, I'm just being realistic. Lafayette had a cakewalk to get to this point and have not seen anything like MV since the JM game last year. I'm not saying Lafayette isn't good or can't win this game because I surely believe they can get it done. I think if MV thinks they've won the title over JM last week they'll lose. Lafayette has some big athletic kids, #11 is a monster, #2, #10, #1 they are all very good players. The QB is a very good player. They are not 14-0 for nothing, they've earned my respect for sure. I'm interested to see how Lafayette will respond if they get down. Have they trailed in any games this year, particularly in the 2nd half? If so how did they respond? Magna Vista trailed in each of the past three games at some point, JM was about to step on their neck before fumbling last week and MV showed championship pedigree by going 98 yards for TD, getting 3 and out and scoring another TD all in the final 6 minutes and change of that game to overcome a 38-28 deficit and win 41-38. From a trench standpoint, Lafayette may be the best team MV has seen this year. Make no mistake Lafayette, I'm not counting you guys out or trying to diss your defense, I've watched, I know they are legit. I've watched MV too though and if anybody can put points on your defense, it is that offense. They strike fast, wouldn't be suprised if MV scores on defense or special teams as well. Will be a great game for sure, no one really talking about it but it's going to be entertaining and I wouldn't be at all suprised if Lafayette wins. Good Luck and safe travels sir.

Re: Wing-T/Double Wing/Flexbone

The stats from JM read a little passing at 100 yards, a little running by the QB and a whole lot of yards by their one RB . Their size looked average.

Re: Magna Vista is more prepared based on schedule

My only feelings are W. Ablemarle beat Monticello so we have played one team better than those three. My other thoughts are monticellos and JM defenses are porus - WA scored a bunch on Monticello, Petersburg and others scored a ton on JM. They leaves Northside. Don't know much about them. Hopwell and Petersburg came with in high scoring offenses with mobile throwing. QB's and fast RB 's ( Petersburg had 3 lightening fast backs- that's why they scored big points on JM). Both Was and Hopewell had huge lines. I think Lafayette is very well prepared though the status of the starting QB is in jeopardy due to his injury the last game.

Re: Wing-T/Double Wing/Flexbone

Petersburg has a losing record, thats kind of a bad comparison. Im no coach but it looked like MV game plan Saturday was to run the football. If im not mistaken Shoalin only attempted 9 passes which is probably his lowest all season. As far as size you are right MV has been outsized in every football game on the lines. Cave spring was suppose to be close, Monticello and Koonce was gonna run all over them, Northside was very athletic and should win by 1 or 2 scores, and we didnt even want to see James Monroe get off the bus. I would say no one besides the true warrior faithful has given us a chance just because we are always outmatched on the line. Not saying these teams above are bad, because its been some good football played and I believe any of these teams could have been traveling to lynchburg. Come Saturday though stats and earlier competition comparison can all be thrown out the window, because both teams will have to show up and play. One mistake can turn the game around, just like the 2 yard line fumble Saturday. Im excited because I have seen alot of good warrior teams fall short, and this is our 1st ever trip. Good luck, cant wait til Sat.

Re: Lafayette

At this point I think you have to cross out the past games leading up to this year because It's football, things happen, some games teams show up and some games they don't. It just depends on which team shows up. Lafayette in your honest opinion, out of 10 games, how many times do you think James Monroe beats y'all last year? I'm just not for comparing to how a team played against someone else to give an analysis because last year I really thought Lafayette was going to beat James Monroe bad based on how James Monroe played against someone last year.

What's the status of the QB as well or what do you think? I hope he can play for the state championship but If it's going to cause more damage and maybe hurt his chances at playing at the next level then he should really think about it but that's kind of hard telling a kid he can't play in the biggest game of his life? I really hope he can play.

Re: Wing-T/Double Wing/Flexbone

Your comments are ok but on Petersburg, and some other teams, records can be deceiving. They played a very tough a Richmond schedule, half against Div 4/5 teams and had key injuries to QB and others in 3 of their losses. They scored 40 against JM , 40 again against tough Kettle Run in the playoffs (Fredericksburg) and in the 50's agsinst 9-2 Poquoson in the playoffs.

How big is the drop off from the starting QB for Lafayette to back up or is it any drop off at all? Is the offense still the same? I know a lot of times you have to make major adjustments but then again your back up is just as good? I'm really hoping everyone is able to play, the weather is great and everyone brings their A game.

The back up (pine) also starts on defense and started one full game when QB MCGinty was out for a pulled hamstring. He played at the end of numerous other games. He throws extremely well, runs good and is a very athletic 6'1 195. My opinion he can very capabably handle the offense with absolutely no changes in play calling. His supporting cast is outstanding. He had a very nice TD pass against WA and after some poor exchanges with the center on the first few snaps in replacement he settled in well with no prep at all. The QB goes into today to see the doctors and see what can be done and how much he can play Saturday. On last years game - IMO the defensive scheme change in the 2nd half cost the game. Changed from blitzing to coverage. In the first half we had really pounded Scroggins, I haven't a clue why we changed. I thought by the 4th Q last year we could have sent him out!

I applaud Lafayette for trying to be so PC. What he is trying to say, without really coming out and saying it, is that MV has about a 1 in100 chance of beating Lafayette because we're to small, we don't throw well enough, we don't have but one running back, and our D can't stop all of their weapons. Hopefully the Warriors will show up Sat. with all of Warrior Nation behind them because you know what; we don't have to be the best team overall, we just have to be the best team on Saturday!! Warriors we are proud of you, play hard, do your best and you will have nothing to be ashamed of!!

Well , my real thoughts are that everyone is going to pick MV to win and is the favorite and I am thinking this is game is really wide open and I agree it will depend who is on their best game Saturday. At this level both teams have a little of everything- size, speed , tough runners and excellent passing. But since and you and I (and most everyone ) has not seen the other team several times it is all conjecture since there are not even any common opponents. My view of MV is based a 2 minute clip max preps. Not enough to draw any meaningful conclusions just some off the top observations. Lafayette is not big either. - Hopewell & WA were larger! One post on here had MV scoring some 34 points! I just do not see that happening- I could be wrong!!

I will be shocked if Magna Vista lays 34 points on Lafayette's lights-out defense. I've seen a lot of high school football at the division 3 and 4 levels, and believe the Rams have what it takes to win a state championship, even with McGinty less than 100%. They have no appreciable weaknesses. This year's Lafayette team and the 2010 state champion Poquoson team are the two best ever in my opinion to come out of the Bay Rivers.

No way

No way would I let someone handle the ball on offense on every play with a cast on their prominent hand/wrist, especially in a championship game. That is a recipe for disaster.
