Congrats to the Dawgs. Prime position to REPEAT on Saturday.
As always, there are "haters". Martinsville basketball teams now have 15 state titles - and, if you are in the vicinity of the "Doghouse" when the 'Dogs are playing, you'll be able to see the state titles - and only the state titles - displayed on the walls. (There are even two state football banners and two state golf banners hanging there.) There are no Piedmont District championship banners; there are no PD Tournament banners; and there are no Regional championship banners. And there are NO runner-up banners displayed there either - unlike some schools who post every sports award the school has ever gotten. There are pictures of each championship team - most of them are in the lobby area with the most recent being inside the gym itself. This is what inspires the players to exceed expectations - the idea of a lasting tribute to their accomplishments - something they can show their children and their grandchildren - and not have it "watered-down" with the presence of lesser accomplishments.
There is a picture of the 1982 Bulldog basketball team in the lobby - along with their record - 17 and 10. For those of you who do not know what that signifies, it means that the team played .500 ball during the regular season. Then one courageous young man stood up in the locker room and told his teammates that this team would not be the one to NOT HAVE a banner and a photo on the wall of the 'Doghouse. So, if that's not "humble" enough for you, GCDEV, then I don't think you can find anything on this green earth that will meet your criteria for humility.
And somewhere at the bottom of the Smith River, there is a 2nd-place trophy - tossed out of an open school bus door by a coach who refused to let his team "settle" for a second-place showing - something that is becoming all too common these days.
