I know Martinsville is 2A but I decided to post here. I haven’t heard much talk about the dynamic duo of Hairston and Davis this year. Are they going to rack up lots of yards this year or will teams be able to contain them? I would like to hear feedback and predictions.

Well they lost to mcmichael friday. If im not mistaken thats a real game for Mcmichael, but im not sure if mville treated that game like a scrimmage. So they could have taken some starters out.

The back of which you speak of DSH is gone for good. Martinsville's numbers are not good this year, only have 18-20 varsity players, had 30 dressed Friday but a bunch of those dressed play in the jv game on Thursday. Jv won 41-0 on Thursday so they have a little talent coming. I feel this maybe a tough year for the Dogs.

I hate to hear that the Two-Headed monster may be split this year. If one of the backs is hurt, hopefully he’ll be back in time for district play.

No, working on the bball. Would have made a good target at 6'5"- 6'6". Lost another one who transferred to Carlilse for bball. The Dogs keep getting smaller as far as numbers go. Down to about 565-570 now.

I saw that both Martinsville and Magna Vista lost 2 very good ball players to Carlisle. Dawgs are going to be good with Jaheim focusing on basketball. He will be an All State talent this year.

I don't think that's particularly true, but I'm admittedly biased. The other local schools aren't any different from my vantage.

I will say that both Orion Martin and Coach Tanner have taken a harder approach than their predecessor and they're not putting up with any junk - and that's a good thing!

I'm in agreement with Mayberry. Give examples that the Dogs "always" have problems like this. Maybe other local schools have issues that are just swept under the rug, so to speak, and you never hear about it. No proof of that, but I put it on the internet. And everybody knows everything on the internet is true.

6'1 junior Bulldogs combo guard Troy Brandon, Jr. is featured fairly prominently in that video as well. He's wearing number 4. I see where he recently joined the football team after a couple of seasons away from the sport.

What else do the Dawgs bring back on the hardwood? Sounds like the Piedmont will be good. Franklin County has size and should make another run in Division 6, GW will be a state championship contender in 4a, Martinsville will have Radford in their paths but should be at the top of 2a, and Halifax will be much improved and should compete for a bid in the 5a state playoffs. I heard MV is improving. Piedmont will be very very good.

Let's see, the school is less than half the size that it use to be back in the "time and era" you speak of. They don't have the feeder programs they used to have, also back in the good old days in the county there used to be 5 high schools and the talent was split up, now only 2 schools. MV with over 1000 kids and Bassett over 1100, Martinsville in the 565-575 range. They can compete in basketball, only need 5-8 good players to do that. Football is a numbers game, Martinsville only has 18-20 varsity players so they are going to have a hard time competing this year. Middle school and the jv teams have good numbers this year and are doing pretty good so far so hopefully they will be more competitive in the future.

Maybe with the numbers game coming up in middle school and JV things will change. I’m still not convinced it’s all about numbers but that’s my opinion, I do know the quality of player is down no matter the quantity. The city has really suffered because of lost jobs and declining enrollment however the band is still huge and awesome, a winning streak in football would do wonders for the school and city. It would also help numbers. I’m hoping for a comeback and renewed interest in the program.

We still have some quality athletes just not as many. If it's not about numbers then pray tell what is it? Also the band is as small as it's ever been this year, numbers are effecting most every program. But I'm sure somebody on the outside looking in probably does have all the answers. Don't worry, when reversion happens the county will probably shut down the high school and ship the kids to MV and Bassett. Least that's what we're hearing.

Wow, are you serious or just playing about the reversion? I didn’t know that was the case! I’ve been gone from the area too long.

Martinsville is going to revert to a town, that's inevitable. Once they do, and this will be a 3-5 year process, then the school systems will become 1. Martinsville will probably get 1 to 2 members on the school board and will be at the mercy of the majority of county members. Which is fair, majority should rule, but it's just going to be interesting how it plays out. 95mv I hope they do go to Bassett also since Magna Vista is such a paragon of virtue, I would hate to see those Martinsville kids mess it up.

I was thinking more of to keep MV in 3a. Sorry you took it another way. But since you say that it would prob be a lot more problems.

Middle school ball isn't always a fool proof method of determining future results, but it can be an indicator of a bit of what is to come with some actual on the field results. That being said....Martinsville Middle beat Laurel Park (Magna Vista feeder) 41-0 in week one - it could've been 70-0 if not for the running clock. Then the Bullpups went on to beat FC (Bassett feeder) 53-6 in week 2. So, 94-6 combined score against the other 2 local schools which feature a much larger enrollment.

In reality it would be MV since I coached there 8 years ending with the last championship in 15. The new Bengals and the old school Bengals are completely different for me, I graduated in 68 and coached there also, but I love my Warriors. I like Brandon Johnson and wish him success, hope he goes 9-1 also, but the new Bengals just don’t feel like home.

Kind of like old MV fans don't think the new Warriors feel like home. Was a fan for alot of years, just cant get used to the red. Just me i guess.

Same way with old blue and white Bengals I played for, the orange just don’t make it. Guess we’re getting old, but tradition means a lot to me. I do like the spread offense and passing the ball but that took a while. But old school power football is almost a relic of my past.
