New Helmet coming off rule

I have a question about the new rule that if a players helmet comes off during play he has to sit out a play. Is the only way this isn't the case if the helmet came off due to a penalty by the other team. If so the refs in last nights Rockbridge - Waynesboro game got it wrong. The QB for Waynesboro had his helmet come off during play but wasn't made to leave for a play, there was no flag on the play.

It seemed like the ref was saying a defenders ARM hit the QBs face mask forcing the helmet off, however if the rule says it has to be a penalty for the player to stay in the game didn't they get this one wrong.

Either the officials interpreted the rule wrong or you misunderstood what the referee said. If you are right, and I have no reason to think you aren't, then there was likely a misinterpretation of the part of the rule that said if the defense caused the helmet to come off then the player can stay. Like you said, no flag means the player has to leave for a play.

Thanks, and I understand this early in the season with a new rule there are going to be some missed calls or misinterpretation of rules. Just like players and coaches refs need some time to iron things out.

Re: How about if a player takes his helmet off?

At the game I was at Friday night a player took his helmet off in frustration after a play, put it back on, and stayed in the game. No flag on the play.

What are you asking? You said he took the helmet off after a play so what did you think should happen?

Re: How about if a player takes his helmet off?

Whitehat. I will ask the question. Does the helmet coming off during a play make the player have to leave the game? If he takes the helmet off in frustration after the play, then no violation has occured? Is the rule the same in NCAA and NFHS?

Is taking the helmet off in frustration a rule violation in the NFL?

Re: How about if a player takes his helmet off?

If it comes off during the play, he has to leave. If he takes it off after the play is over, he doesn't. Doesn't matter why. What if he takes it off to get water, or clean mud out of the mask, or any number of other reason? Like many many many many rules, it is NOT the same as the NCAA rule. No idea about the NFL rule.

Keep in mind, the rule was put in place to curb the trend of players jeopardizing their own safety by wearing helmets loose so they would pop off after a hit and give a dramatic effect. The Fed wants them properly fitted and worn in the safest manner possible. Taking a helmet off after the play isn't a safety issue.

If an opposing player deliberatley pulls and opponents helmet off, would this be an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

Re: How about if a player takes his helmet off?

No, it would be a personal foul. You cannot have unsportsmanlike conduct on action that includes contact. USC is behavior such as taunting, threatening, swearing, wearing improper equipment or other things that do not involve contact.

Even if the action is a great example of very poor or unsporting behavior, if it involves contact, it's a personal foul. if it's flagrant, ejection is warranted.
