Never to early , how do you feel about your team?
I think Galax will be solid again. TB the key.

Auburn has a chance to be very good. 15 or 16 starters back from a playoff team. The key is will they be able to find a tailback to take some pressure off of nelson at fullback. They need a threat at TB so teams can't bunch it up and key on Nelson. #22 (a freshman) came in and played really well in the playoffs and looks like he has potential to be that guy. we'll have to see.

The key for Auburn is Coach Turner health and is he still able to Coach them, I was told he turned down the opportunity to take a few jobs. Auburn needs better skill if they want to get to the next level, coaching will only take them so far, you could see that against GW. I think Radford, Fort , George Wythe , Galax and Honaker top 5.

Auburn does well against power teams. They seem to struggle when playing against speed. They can fix this with the team they have, with just tightening up there defense. I too believe they'll do well next year.

PM loses everyone as has been mentioned many times on here. The QB will be moving back to tailback (or so I've heard) and I'm assuming Ryheems little brother will be moving up.

Other than that... I dunno.

5-5 maybe???? The coaches have done a good job since taking over in 2011 so I'm not thinking this will be a horrible season, just not a good one either.

Yeah im sure Jack could get the franklin co job if he wanted it. but i think he plans to be right there at auburn if he can health wise. and i know they need skill and i saw some potential as i mentioned in my earlier post. but they have what they have. all they can do is the best they can with what they have. foot speed cant be coached.

Essex will be in the hunt again next year. Losing some good players but will reload. A good number of starters will be back and some good 2nd teamers will be making a name for themselves. The O & D lines will still have size, still will have WR's with good speed, defense will still be strong. The QB position will be filled by #12 Nelson. He's 1st cousin to Essex star QB Broaddus. He can run as well as throw. He's listed as 6ft 180lbs. Strong arm. He was the jv QB in 2012 & 13. Could very well see Salem again next year. Just my opinion.

Essex jv finished 7-2....losses to 3A James Monroe and in OT to Washington & Lee. From what I'm told, most of the jv team were 8th graders this year. There were at least 8 that I felt could of played varsity. They had good size and speed.

I think Essex will go deep in the playoffs for the next 3 years if the fella's put in the work.

Now, just gotta see if any coaching changes will take place here in the area.

Altavista JV was like 8-1 only loss was to 3A Rustburg. There Bteam was like 5-2 Have some good kids coming up ,also the yourger kids got alot of playing time this year.

I agree Essex will be strong again. Nelson will do just fine at qb and with Martin and Monroe returning the offense should be explosive again. Also I can't think of the kids name but heard he's an 8th grader this year and is gonna be a stud. He's about 6'1 220 already. If the team puts in the work like they did this past year then they could very well be back in Salem again. A major sleeper team I say to watch out for is King and Queen. Yes they've been down for years but had a solid jv team this year with some talented 8th graders and a freshman running back in Corey Ward who has the potential to be a star. Also will have a couple kids who didn't play this year back and one should be a great fit in the wing t. They've already been in the weight room for 3 weeks now and if the kids just keep believing and buy into the system then the results will come. It won't be easy but they have the potential to win 5 or 6 games next year and make the playoffs. Their two best classes are their 8th and 9th grade classes so they'll be young but I believe they have the talent to put KQ back on the map. Just have to be willing to put in the work. Myself and the other coaches believe in them and I think they're starting to believe in themselves too. Now we just need to get the community to rally behind these kids as well.

Any idea where I can find a copy of Altavista's B-Team's schedule? That's awesome that a school of their size has enough kids to fill out a B-Team to begin with!

Galax, Radford, Honaker, GW and maybe auburn. Not any particular order in west.

I spoke with one of the parents , they said coach spoke about his health at the banquet . They said doctor has changed his medication and had him wear a heart monitor for 24 hours to check rate, beats etc, doctors would love for him to change his style and approach to coaching (Lol), according to the parent Coach said he will not be coaching anywhere but Auburn next year, Coach said the best of Auburn football is in front of the program if the players continue to work hard. This parent seemed happy about the news.

I moved from Georgia to Rockbridge County earlier in the year, and thus, it was my first year of following Parry McClure. I must first of all say that it was a pleasure watching Coach Craft lead his team to a successful year, and I look forward to following the Blues for as long as I live in the area. As for next year, I'll be just as pleased with a 5-5 record as I was for this year's team as long as they are playing up to their full potential. That's all anyone can ask. My main concern is that a larger school will lure Coach Craft away sometime in the near future. Hope not, but I'd say it is a lead pipe cinch that somebody will make a run at him very soon. Be ready to pony up if you want to keep him.

Merry Christmas to everyone here. He is born.

Merry Christmas to you as well.

I agree that as long as the players are playing to their full potential that any record is fine. Absolutely agree with that. Well said.

I think Buena Vista is very lucky to have Coach Craft and his staff at PM. And the best part is that he is a hometown guy, so I don't look for him to go anywhere. He has done amazing things for that program in the short time he has been head coach. He did great things for many years as the JV head coach as well. In fact, throughout the 2000's the JV teams were routinely excellent, while he was head coach there. And then once they got to varsity their records would plummet. That all changed once he got to Varsity.

Altavista Bteam was 6-2 there JV was 8-1 BTeam lost to LCA which is a private school and to 2A Appomattox. The JV lost 3A Rustburg

Thank you for the info!

Hope you and your family had a great Christmas and hope yall are enjoying those back to back titles in A-town. Sounds like they're gonna be tough for a while.

I think Auburn will be solid but the team I could see making a serious run next season is Radford. The talent is there but those kids HAVE to get in the weightroom and stay committed. If they can get bigger up front with what they bring back lookout.

I agree Radford has the potential to make a serious run to Salem, anytime you have skill like them and GW you have a chance. As far as weightlifting it is the philosophy of the coach, Turner, Dixon Hale they build there program thru the weight room.

Re:B-Team

Sorry, mmqp, but that comment doesn't make any sense. If you have enough players to field a jv, there should be more than enough to field a B-team, as there are typically more students in the lower classes. Seeing B-teams are combined 7th and 8th grade, there should be plenty. Schools with decent participation, leave all but elite 9th and 10th graders on the jv. Only elite 8th graders play jv, if any, in football. One thing that does tend to take some of the 7th graders away from B-team is the local rec. depts or football clubs that sponsor football through the 7th grade. Rustburg is an example. The local 6th-7th grade team had a handful of 7th graders that did stay down, rather than play B-team. Several of those kids were as good or better than the starters on the B-team. The Rustburg kids that stayed down, went undefeated for the 6th straight year, and have NEVER lost a football game. Not putting Altavista down, but their youth program typically gets piledriven in football. Just shows what a great coach Scharnus is, to put it together when they get to the high school.

Re:B-Team

I think my idea of a B-Team and the actual way B-teams are done these days are different.

See, I've been researching VHSL football history for many years. And way back in the day (40's and 50's especially) many larger schools would field "B-Teams", which consisted of guys in high school who would probably never otherwise see the field on the Varsity team. That's what I thought was meant by B-Team when I first read this post. So it was just a misunderstanding on my part. After I saw the picture of Altavista's B-Team I knew I was wrong.

Still, good for them for having a good season.

Re:B-Team

I look for Galax to be strong up front next year, we will see if they have the skill players to take advantage of that.

Isn't there reclassification in 2015....

Aren't there some pretty decent 2A teams coming down to 1A

Riverheads and Luray were two in my mind

Re: Isn't there reclassification in 2015....

Yes, but in the west the teams to beat will be Radford, Galax, GW , The Fort and Honaker. The next 5 will be Parry McCluer, Narrows, Hurley, Chiihowie , Auburn/ Rural Retreat. The 2nd. 5 is based returning players. Every year there is a surprise team ( Narrows or East Mont ).

Galax, Radford, Honaker, GW and maybe auburn. Next 5 in west, Rural Retreat, JIB, Chilhowie, EM & FC
