Northumberland's Mitchell Jett passed away at the age of 79 on July 1. Jett rushed for 2,512 yards in his senior season of 1962 to help Northumberland win the District F (forerunner to the Northern Neck District). This was an era when teams played up to 8 regular season games and that was it as there were no playoffs. Northumberland played 7 games in Jett's senior campaign. He totaled 4,330 rushing yards in his senior and junior seasons combined but no stats were recorded in his freshman or sophomore seasons. Jett's senior season rushing total was the VHSL single season record until 1987 when it was eclipsed by both Terry Kirby (14 games, 2,864 yards) of Tabb and Eric Bates of James Monroe (14 games, 3,039 yards). Jett's brother, Jimmie, was the long-time boys basketball coach at Northumberland who piloted the Indians to a state championship in 1996.
Ironically, Jett's football coach at Northumberland, Jack Eades, passed away in May at age 93.
