Dinwiddie 48 James Monroe 10

Site: Maury Field, Fredericksburg, Virginia

Weather: Hot and muggy

Game one is in the books and its nice to see the Generals put one in the win column. Dinwiddie put the game away early and was able to rest a majority of the starters in the 4th quarter. QB Bryce Witt showed grit and smarts playing with an injured index finger on his throwing hand. Managed the game well and utilized hisbprogressions. James Monroe has good team speed, but I must admit I thought they would present a better challenge. Time will tell whether this was a good win or a down year for JM.

Offense:

Pros - Very efficient, no turnovers, and balanced. 431 yards total offense. Our running game led by Sturdivant (119 yards on 11 carries) showed up and produced 244 yards. Witt threw for 155 with two td's.

Cons - James Monroe was able to establish a sound pass rush and sacked Witt twice. Line play was fair at times, but needs to keep working.

Defense:

Pros - Fast and physical. Held JM to 62 total yards. Defended the run well and did not allow JM to get to the edge. One interception.

Cons - Allowed quarterback to escape the pass rush and scamper up the middle a couple of times. DB's were beaten a twice , but JM did not execute the completions.

Special Teams:

Pros - Kicker did well on xp's. Has strong leg. Kickoffs were fairly high and deep. No problems with long snapping. Mills was on the money. Kickoff and punt return teams were solid.

Cons - Kick off coverage was horrendous. Coach Mills will surely emphasize this area this week. Punting game (3 total) was a bit inconsistent. Work still to be done.

Next week: @Hanover

Preview to come.

I was proud of one of the intangibles. JM had no quit. As a result, they had a couple of players get chippy in the second half. And there were a few missed calls or "no calls" that sure appeared to be clipping and/or blocking in the back. Not even once did I see a Dinwiddie player get mouthy or retaliate. That shows a lot of maturity and self restraint. A mark of a veteran and unselfish team.

Different game here.

Jackets talk trash all night. It is not discouraged. They cheap shot in the pile all night. It is not discouraged. They are taught to chop block, cut block and hold. The attitude is, if it's not flagged, it's not a penalty. But it's done.

I had sons play 6 consecutive seasons and they played JM every year. According to them and every other player I've talked too, there is no more trash talking, holding, illegal, cheap shot team than JM. But they win.

I love these kids because I know so many and they have sat at my table so often. But when someone is on the ground, you don't kick dirt n their face. Gotta' give Dinwiddie that. They showed class because JM was completely overmatched.
