Staying within that same Burt Torrence coaching tree is an interesting move to say the least. This to me is a very similar hire to their last hire and although he stated he is in it for 10 years, only time will tell. I wonder what his reasoning for leaving the program in 2013 was...
However, Hiring the "players coach" has become the trend lately. A lot of the hires throughout the state this year seem to have been driven by how relatable a coach is to the student body or how "likable" a coach is over actual credentials and resume as a coach. I guarantee you that every serious applicant for the job had more coaching experience than 4/5 years as an assistant and a year as a MS head coach. Goes back to the old adage, "It's not the x's and o's, it's the jimmys and joes." If he is well liked by the kids, they will come out. If kids have fun, they will come out. The more kids that are out, the better the chance of having a few special athletes to make a real impact. If you get the kids out, get the ball in the right kid's hands, and keep the team morale up throughout the season you have a chance to be successful.
At the same time, I don't like that he already stated they will run a spread offense and 4-3 defense on day one of his hiring. I think coaches who are unwilling to change what they do for their players are less successful unless they have a program built and mold their players to fit into it. I suppose his spread offense could take many shapes but he sounded like he wants to throw the ball from the roanoke times article.
A very interesting hire to say the least. I definitely thought we would get a big name from outside of the programs previous coaching tree. Hopefully he does well.
