Several teams begin practice tomorrow how many kids are out for teams? Post #s here. Often, the sign of a healthy program is a good turnout in numbers.

I thought they had 474 and a half?
Interesting that a bunch of SWVA guys liked that comment. Do they think Essex wouldn't have killed Chillhowie last year too? Title game was played in the Semis boys. This year it might be played in the region final.

I am not following. Who are the two teams you are speaking of? If you mean Essex and Riverheads, then wouldn't it be the state semis again?

Come on. Yiu have to know why all of the "SWVA" guys liked it. What are you doing advocating for them on the 2A board anyway? Isnt Riverheads 1A? I do understand your confusion, however. Looks like they are in 1A for the near future, so you folks should be happy.

So SWVA guys can't get a chuckle out of 474 1/2 comment???? What does the comment have to do with Essex killing Chilhowie boy????? Maybe some of us just get a kick out of you guys fighting over Riverheads numbers. If VHSL says they're 1A, then they're 1A and you line up and play the team on the other side of the ball.

No dog in the fight here and largely don't care much because we are talking about 1A on 2A board, but.....there's no question Essex would have likely handled Chilhowie last year if referring to Tim's statement. Essex and Riverheads was an all out battle and close game. Riverheads went on to thrash Chilhowie and the mercy rule was in effect. I think Riverheads (obviously), Essex and also Sussex Central would have topped Chilhowie last year. Sussex beat Essex last year in regular season and only lost 2 games in regular season to Southampton (3A) and Greensville County. Both losses by a total of 9 points. Essex went on to barely beat Sussex when they played in the playoffs for a rematch. Essex and Sussex last year were right there with Riverheads and there wasn't a huge gap. That's no to say the "East is better than west" and all that crazy talk, but...…...for last year in 1A, the West was clearly down and the East was really strong. This year may be different.

Who cares?
I started this post asking about numbers. Can we get back to the subject please? If you wanna argue about who was best in 1A last season, please do so on the 1A board and dont hi-jack this thread. Thank you.

I counted 42 on the field for Graham this morning. Not sure if there were more in the weight room. Didnt see some of the linemen. They may have been somewhere else...

@Ryan4VT and @Union_Fan those are great numbers for a Class 2 program! I'm not very familiar with Class 2 but I can't imagine those are average numbers for most Class 2 programs. Or is it?

Not sure about the rest of the state, but on this end that's probably a little above average. 40-50 is fairly average for other 2A teams near us. Some in the 30s.

According to the newspaper. Graham had exactly 50 on day 1.

Goochland has had around 80 players on the varsity sidelines the last few years, but I'm not sure if that includes the JV players.

Hard to get a good count when varsity and JV practice together. I have never liked this practice setup. JV players end up standing around too much. JV should practice separately from varsity.

My guess is that would require a JV Coach, which is probably not something affordable.

Not if your varsity only has 20 players. You are going to need your JV. I assume when a Giles poster wrote that they had out 27 players, I took that as meaning grades 9-12. The words varsity and junior varsity can muddy the water when talking about Class 1A and 2A schools, and even some 3A schools. The words Varsity and Junior Varsity apply to which kids are playing on which squads which doesn't mean a ton to me. I am interested in how many total kids, grades 9-12 because that is generally what will be running out of the locker room for the "varsity" game. I'm sure some exceptions are for 1A and 2A programs that get a ton of kids out like Richlands........meaning...I'm not sure if they dress all their 9th graders, but the majority of 1A and 2A schools do. So....that brings up the point about Giles, do they have 27 total kids out for grades 9-12, or is that 10-12 or is that 11-12. Huge difference if that's 9-12 compared to just 11 and 12. There can be a big difference in what 27 means if not specific.

Giles has 27 and that includes 4 sophomores...we have no 8th grade team at all but an 8th and 9th grade team

8th grade only had 7-8 players come out so they ditched the 8th grade team

Still pitiful numbers for Giles

Madison County had 59 I heard. Best numbers in years. Coach Rhoades is doing a good job of getting the bodies out as he rebuilds the once proud program.

Not sure what our numbers are but we lost at least 5 good players to grades yesterday. Very disappointing.

The freshman is there but unfortunately the senior which happens to be my nephew was one of them. He did it to himself. It's disappointing but I talked to him and hopefully encouraged him to learn from it.
