I finally had a chance to attend a High School football game last night! Boy, what a joy it was to see this special team live! Seeing all the familiar faces & buddies (the old guys at the top of the stands that always gather around the 50 yd line) was fun, too.
In many ways, some things never change, like assuming the refs are out to make their mark on a wonderful route of your opponent. I did feel that way but on the other hand i am glad they kept things in control. It was getting chippy out on the field last night & I think they did their job well.
As far as my first view of Smith's team, I'd have to say that it looks like Coach David Bedwell has made an impression upon Coach Scott. The Tigers have made up their team to resemble those powerhouse teams that beat many but also beat Scott when he was at Ocean Lakes in the State Title game.
O. Smith establishes their power run game and as soon as the Defense over commits, boom, Ethan Vasco is there to through a bomb, find a player open in flats or break a long run up the middle for a TD. The weapons are far more than a team can prepare for.
The Defense has made it miserable for runners all year & this will continue to lead their success. Last night they gave up a few bend but don't break passing yardage but the receivers were getting blasted for anything near the middle of the field! With a couple of key players resting last night, I expect even those yards will be eliminated upon their return.
I am guardedly optimistic for the rest of the year after seeing Smith come up short too many times in recent years. But, i'd also put this bunch up against any team with the expectation that this year will be different for them!
