Open Dates 2017-2018

Lake Taylor High School (Norfolk, VA) needs 3 games as well with the dates being flexible. We are very willing to travel. Contact Coach Mike Whittington mwhitting@nps,k12.va.us (757-202-5974) or mwhittington@statva.com

Champe vs LT would be a darn good matchup.

But man, what a road trip. About 4 hours.

I've heard Salem would like to drop William Byrd with the option of picking up Franklin Co. (To me that would be a wash, points-wise and competition-wise) It would be cool to see a 2 year matchup with Champe or LT to go along with Dinwiddie. I doubt it will happen, but that would be some good matchups. The home crowd for any of those games would be huge.

Salem/LT!!!

You mention Dinwiddie playing LT and people that can't tell you a football from a tennis ball suddenly want to go to that game. Same thing now, in Salem. I believe the ole stadium would be slam sold out.

And LT would probably have their biggest home crowd in years if the hated "Spartans" came to town!

Yea Tuscarora is looking for a game and I asked the AD and he's like that's a long trip. We don't care on our end we've scheduled Hylton, GW Danville, Amherst, Battlefield, Monticello, Northeastern NC, and Bird in past years we just want a team that can get us playoff ready.

Hey DP - with standard traffic, is two hours forty-five minutes about right from Dinwiddie High to Salem Stadium? Looks like it's 460, almost the entire way.

I know we discussed this before, but FC for Byrd wouldn't even be as good as a wash at this point. I don't want to see Salem pick the Eagles up again until they show definitive signs of a turn-around. That could be three or four (or more) years away. I think it would be nice to play both Roanoke City schools every year, as in the old days of the Roanoke Valley District, but Fleming isn't much better than FC at this point.

Some other unusual, far-flung opponent to go along with Dinwiddie would be nice, but doesn't seem very likely.

Figure 3 hours, Spartan, to be safe. After you get past Roanoke, traffic should be a breeze. And yes sir, 460 almost all the way. One right turn on to Courthouse Road, (Rt. 627), about five miles straight and the stadium is on the right behind the Middle School, (the old high school). Plenty of parking, but late arrivals have to park across Courthouse Road in the parking area at the new high school. Worst case senerio, about a four or five minute walk.

Just for future reference, there is ample handicap parking right at the gate. With a little notice, I think we could arrange for a golf cart to give a ride to someone that arrives late and needs a little help getting from the high school parking lot to the gate. That's not an official offer, but we try to be helpful.

After you pass Appomattox, the choices of places to eat are a little sparse. At least, right on 460. After Crewe, there is nothing I would recommend that is right on 460. (Crewe is about 45 minutes from the football field.)

However, there are your usual fast food choices, plus a few other decent restaurants in Blackstone, (30 minutes from the . All of which are no more than 5 minutes off of 460.

And finally, within 30 minutes past your turn at Courthouse Road, there are a ton of great choices. But you would have to backtrack.

Of course, our concessions are pretty good. Not the best you have ever seen, but from some of the chatter on here, probably better than what you are being offered at Salem Stadium.

The Salem location makes it very hard for them to play competitive teams. That's just all there is to it. The distance is the issue but you never know. LT put Amherst on their schedule and made it work. Plus, two teams like that is almost a guarantee of at least one loss to start the season. But overall, a plus to me for the Spartans.

I agree FC wouldn't even be a wash right now compared to Byrd. I know Salem played Botetourt 23-24x with LB winning only once, but if we were to pick up a Roanoke area team for the next cycle they would seem to be the best bet regarding points and probably gate as well. I would think Magna Vista would be a good choice considering their recent success and they travel well. A Seminole team like JF or Brookville would be good local picks as well. They are usually good for above average win totals, provide good competition, and I think they both travel well when they are winning especially. These more local choices would be more likely than picking up Champe or LT. They won't offer the competition that Champe or LT would provide, but they are all playoff caliber, would probably bring much better gate than the more distant opponents, and allows our fans to more easily travel to the opponent 1 to 1 & 1/2 hours away as opposed to 3-4 hours away. I agree with you Spartan, I'm just writing what I've heard (Byrd replaced most likely by FC) not that I agree with it.

I'm only able to see home games during the regular season so I'd be there to watch Brookville, JF, Magna Vista, LT, Champe, or whomever they get. For the consideration of the traveling Salem fan (like yourself) the Seminole opponents or Magna Vista, etc... would be much preferred.

I think adding Dinwiddie was a way to toughen their schedule. (Of course just about any opponent would be a big competitive improvement over Carroll Co) I really doubt they'll add another title contender from so far away. If they replace William Byrd as I've heard is a possibility then I would expect a competitive local team would be the likely replacement. (Lord Botetourt, possibly Magna Vista, JF, Brookville) This is just purely speculation on my part, Franklin Co or William Fleming could be the replacement if they decide to drop Byrd. (As Spartan of Yore noted these choices would not toughen the schedule considering their recent records even though they are 6A & 5A respectively) They would likely bring less points than William Byrd would. I expect Byrd to be better for the next 2 years with Larry Basham at RB than either FC or WF. With the new cycle starting next year and assuming the goal is to toughen the schedule then I would expect a Seminole team, Magna Vista, Lord Botetourt, etc... to be high on the list as potential replacements if they decide to replace Byrd.

I was just checking the dates for the Dinwiddie game next year, I believe DP said September 8th. If I'm not mistaken that's the slot William Byrd normally occupies so it does sound like Byrd is being replaced. So I guess the question is who has an opening September 29th which is the slot Carroll Co normally occupies. Salem may have already filled the schedule idk, but if not they'd be looking for an opponent for that weekend or that could be left as an open date. In the current cycle Week 2 is open so they could find an opponent needing to fill their schedule who has an opening September 1st next year that would also work. Another question is will Amherst & Salem continue to play next cycle? With this being a dead time on the boards it's fun to speculate who will fill the OOD schedule next year. We know Northside & Dinwiddie, it will be interesting to see who fills the open spot and whether Amherst will return.

Next year Amherst will have an extra district game with LCA (they also play this year, I assume this year LCA won't count towards their district record since LCA isn't playing a full SD slate till next year) will Amherst change their OOD games for 2017-18 (currently Salem, Rockbridge, and Appomattox are the OOD games)

Like you say Mike, fun to speculate. Don't hang your hat on the date of Sept. 8 for our matchup just yet. I'll see if the schedule has been set in stone, and report back.

My personal preference is for Salem to pick up MV. I have as many good friends down there as I do in the Salem area. I would have a blast being the protagonist! (Shit stirrer, as my son in law refers to me!)

I would think that Coaches Christmas and Mags would prefer not to play. There is a lot of down side, (from a strategy point of view), to playing a good, extremely well coached team twice in a season. Especially when the second game is a do or die game in the playoffs.

Driving 460 between Farmville and Roanoke is a breeze but you need to watch out for radar sometimes. We use 307 shortcut from 360 to Farmville.

It's pretty typical, keep it 7-9 over and you should be alright. But....?
Be careful taking advice from "Richard Petty"! Job security and selective enforcement (overtime) leads to tons of tickets on 460. Once you get around Farmville the speed limit is sixty-five (Crewe 35 and I mean 35). Don't creep past 70 and you will be just fine. From Salem take 81 to Troutville/Daleville exit. Take the cut through to Bonsack and head west on 460. Next turn is a right Courthouse Road. As DP said its about five miles down on the right. When the time comes we will discuss the matter and provide our Preps posters with a little tailgate. We are going to make sure Mike makes the trip and will likely force him to ride our touchdown horse "Cisco" (whether we score or not). Have to make the trip to Salem first. I already have **** reservations. The accommodations aren't four star, but Moms cooking sure is.

Thanks to you and Navy for the travel info. Sadly, I'll probably have to ask you to repeat all this in a little over two years.

Looks like Courthouse Road runs right through the middle of the Five Forks battlefield. Anything to see there?

It's a very low key stop, but it is worth visiting if you are interested in, and a little knowledgable of the Civil War in Virginia. But, the interpretation center probably closes at 5:00pm.

Like you say, we are looking two and a half years down the road. Hopefully, we will all be here then, having this same discussion.

Just a bit of history. A group of soldiers from the roanoke and new river vslley were captured at five forks and imprisoned. Many are buried in hollywood cemetery in richmond. Paplin park is a great historical park if you come down early and enjoy history.

Love the history. I think thousands of Confederates were taken prisoner at Five Forks. I didn't know about the soldiers from out this way being buried in Hollywood.

Not to make light of the past, but I hope Dinwiddie isn't in a "take no prisoners" mood when Salem comes to town.

We shall see. I wish the 2016-17 Dinwiddie team was coming to Salem. We have some good weapons and the game would be awesome.

Not sure where either team will be in two years. Time will tell.

The only reason I knew about the hollywood cemetary was, because one of my relatives was captured their. Did some research and found out about the swva group. He is buried in Hollywood.

Take the day off and I will show you around. It will be worth your time.
