Outlook for Shenandoah Teams

Even though this will be the weirdest season in history, someone will have to win the Shenandoah District this year so shall we kick around what we think of the six teams? For those of you who have not heard, Waynesboro is playing against all the teams in the district to compensate for the lack of available games in its own district, but those will not count toward the Shenandoah standings, even though the Giants will be full-fledged district members next year.

So back to the question at hand...will it be Buffalo Gap, Fort Defiance, Riverheads, Staunton, Stuarts Draft or Wilson rising to the top this year? Here is my wild guess and I will be interested in seeing what the rest of you think.

I believe the top two will be Staunton and Stuarts Draft in one order or another. SD reportedly has a lot of people back but until they take the floor, no one knows if the new coach is retaining the same style of play they have used for the last decade or so. As for Staunton, you just have to put them in there because of tradition, although I think they lost some significant points to graduation.

The other four are pretty much a toss-up in my mind, mainly because I really don't remember too much about who had what last year and who had good JV teams. On a hunch I might put Fort Defiance in the three spot because I seem to remember a sophomore or junior that was pretty tough last year. Maybe one of their fans can fill us in.

Coach Hartman knows his stuff at Wilson and tends to get the most out of his players so they will be competitive night in and night out. Buffalo Gap had a nice rebuilding year last season and their success will depend on whether they continue that upward trend.

As for my Gladiators, and please don't think I am putting them last just because I am discussing them last, but they will be in rebuilding mode this year. Last year was a banner year for the Pride as they went to the state quarters, where they barely lost to eventual state co-champs Mathews in a game that went right down to the final shot. But most of the players from that team are gone now so the new version of the Gladiators will have to make their own history. They may surprise some people if the talent that I recall from the JV team progresses at the rate you would hope they would and if a few of them have hit the weight room, the camps, etc. That JV team had three quality players to the best of my recollection that are more than capable of stepping right into the varsity ranks.

So that is my two cents...next????

I would agree that Stuarts Draft is the team to beat, no matter what system they run. Also, Buffalo Gap lost a lot from last years team. Sorry to say that I think Gap will have a tough season. But, still great to have a season.

This will be a down year for the valley. Good luck picking a favorite. It will come down to who can steal the most games. Might be tough to win on the road.

What I know:

Staunton talent wise, will be sliding. Sadly, they are drifting away from anything Hatcher built. They are losing one absolute star and other reliable players from last year. It will be interesting to see how they play throughout the year. I’m sure they expect to compete.

Wilson lost huge talent, got some help from transfers and maybe some talent on an older JV team from last year. It will take awhile for them to get going, Covid willing. Hartman will have them competing for sure. If D1 attention is really after his son, maybe they are the team to beat?

Riverheads will be competitive with their athletes, but will be night and day different with what they lost. I don’t think their overall team basketball skill set can compliment their stud there. Chad will have them playing hard, but they will struggle to see the success they saw last year for sure.

Stuart’s Draft will struggle some. They have athletes, but switching from the Grinnell System to actually playing half court basketball on offense and defense, they aren’t going to be as successful as you think. It takes a while to build raw basketball talent, the Grinnell system doesn’t really do that and it will expose all the bad habits it built, especially early. However, they are interesting because they have athletes and a very talented guard.

Fort will look to get it going, but most nights it will fall on their talented shooting guard. His supporting cast will determine how successful they will be. Fort needs to develop their young talent from JV, and see how they transition to varsity.

Gap is building a program and slowly becoming competitive. This year all programs slide down and Gap will compete with them. We saw this in spurts last year. I know they lost a lot, but they have two dynamic scorers at guard. Both could give the SGs from Fort and Riverheads a run at POY in the district. The wildcard is their big man. Not skilled, but big enough to impact the game. If they find a supporting cast and get production from their big, they could surprise people.

Waynesboro always has athletes, but really needs some major investments in their sports programs across the board. I don’t know what to expect. I can’t help but to think that they are going to struggle.
