Even though this will be the weirdest season in history, someone will have to win the Shenandoah District this year so shall we kick around what we think of the six teams? For those of you who have not heard, Waynesboro is playing against all the teams in the district to compensate for the lack of available games in its own district, but those will not count toward the Shenandoah standings, even though the Giants will be full-fledged district members next year.
So back to the question at hand...will it be Buffalo Gap, Fort Defiance, Riverheads, Staunton, Stuarts Draft or Wilson rising to the top this year? Here is my wild guess and I will be interested in seeing what the rest of you think.
I believe the top two will be Staunton and Stuarts Draft in one order or another. SD reportedly has a lot of people back but until they take the floor, no one knows if the new coach is retaining the same style of play they have used for the last decade or so. As for Staunton, you just have to put them in there because of tradition, although I think they lost some significant points to graduation.
The other four are pretty much a toss-up in my mind, mainly because I really don't remember too much about who had what last year and who had good JV teams. On a hunch I might put Fort Defiance in the three spot because I seem to remember a sophomore or junior that was pretty tough last year. Maybe one of their fans can fill us in.
Coach Hartman knows his stuff at Wilson and tends to get the most out of his players so they will be competitive night in and night out. Buffalo Gap had a nice rebuilding year last season and their success will depend on whether they continue that upward trend.
As for my Gladiators, and please don't think I am putting them last just because I am discussing them last, but they will be in rebuilding mode this year. Last year was a banner year for the Pride as they went to the state quarters, where they barely lost to eventual state co-champs Mathews in a game that went right down to the final shot. But most of the players from that team are gone now so the new version of the Gladiators will have to make their own history. They may surprise some people if the talent that I recall from the JV team progresses at the rate you would hope they would and if a few of them have hit the weight room, the camps, etc. That JV team had three quality players to the best of my recollection that are more than capable of stepping right into the varsity ranks.
So that is my two cents...next????
