PM Senior Thrower, Joshua Fischer had an outstanding performance in both field events at his first outdoor competition of the year this past Saturday in Lynchburg Virginia at the "Rod Camden All Star Kickoff Classic" Track & Field Meet winning the Shot-Put event and finishing 2nd in the discus.
Fischer started out strong in the Shot -Put event with his first throw of 52 feet and some change, setting a "New Meet Record" by a little more than four feet.. Fischer's next few throws were consistent as he hit marks between 53' and 54' setting a new meet record each time.. Fischer showed great confidence every time he stepped into the circle.. smiling, joking with the other throwers and occasionally conferring with his throwing coaches' on improving his footwork and speed and at one point just before his last throw of the event he was overheard saying, "Coach, I got this, I'm just going to go for it"!!
On Fischer's final throw of the day he looked relaxed and very confident as he stepped into the circle while holding the 12 pound steel ball between what looked like only his thumb and middle finger... Fischer walked to the front of the circle, gave a hard look to the other end of the gravel pit, smiled and walked to the back of the circle and placed the shot in the ready position.. The senior PM thrower came through the circle in the "Glide Technique" and let "er fly...
It was immediately obvious that this was by far his best throw of the day and most likely a new "Personal Best" and again, another new meet record.. The throw was measured and on his last throw of the day, Fischer had surpassed his previous best mark of 53'- 6" by nearly three feet..
The final heave of the shot for Fischer measured at 56'-2" !! That's just under two feet shy of the "School Record" set last season by former team mate and current William & Mary thrower K J Cook, whose best throw of his high school career was 58'-1"... Now, just under two feet??? I know, that may not sound like much however, you must remember that the shot weighs 12 POUNDS!!
Can he do it?? Absolutely... Will he do it?? I guess we'll have to wait and see... Does he think he can/will do it?? According to Fischer," Ohh yeah, I got this".. NOW THAT'S CONFIDENCE!!!
In the Discus competition Fischer also displayed a strong performance and finished the day in 2nd place on his final spin of the disc at 148'-10" (again, another Personal Best throw) just eight feet shy of the winner..
PM's throwing Coaches are pleased with Fischer's performance coming out the Indoor Season with his State Throwing Title in the Shot and with this being just the first outdoor meet. "Things are looking good, it's really starting to come together for him and he knows what he has to do. He's getting bigger, he's getting stronger, his technique is getting better and he's really having fun with it. Even though it's a lot of time and work involved, he's making the most out of it, he really puts in the time and he puts in the work and he's having fun and I think that's going to be the difference".. It's going to be close, he's got a "shot", but he's going to have to have a day that everything just clicks, a day where everything goes just right (kinda like this past weekend) and if that happens, and it has, you'd better be on your toes because this kid is huge, he's as strong as all get out and, he can really throw... I really think he's going to do BIG THINGS, but ultimately it's up to him, if he wants it.
Congratulations Mr. Fischer and we'll be waiting...... And watching!!
And as always, GO BLUES!!
