Parry McCluer standout Joshua Fischer has made his decision and has announced that...
After fielding numerous offers and opportunities at the DII and DIII level and several local DI opportunities/offers, a couple of major Walk-On offers, the 6'-5", 265 pound OT, DE, TE and Special Teams Kicker for the Fighting Blues the past two years has announced that he has accepted an Athletic Scholarship and he will be continuing his Academic and Athletic future as a member of The Big South Conference, Gardner-Webb University "Runnin' Bulldogs" MEN'S TRACK and FIELD THROWS program.. Josh will be pursuing a degree in "Sports Medicine" (he wants to be Physical Therapist)
According to Fischer, this was an emotionally tough, physically exhausting and mentally difficult decision to make. There were some great offers/opportunities out there, I have met some awesome people including Coaches, players and a lot great guys that I have previously competed against. I have seen some unbelievable campuses and I was flattered by them all however, in the end I felt like I needed to do what I felt was best for me and my family.. Mostly for me, physically..
I love playing football... Football is a tough sport and I know that.. It has been an unbelievable journey for me and it can be a great ride if everything works out just right.. Or, it can be devastating and career ending if it doesn't.. I think I had a pretty good high school football career but it wasn't without physical sacrifices, lots of re-hab and many, many trips to the Physical Therapists. I understand, that's all part of it, I get it.. I also know that I had other options and opportunities.
Things just have a way of working out and I have worked hard to get to where I am both physically and competitively on both sides of the athletic spectrum. I knew at the end of my Jr. year what I wanted to accomplish in Track & Field going into my Sr. year.
I wanted to be the Indoor State Champion and I wanted to be a two-time Outdoor State Champion, I wanted to be the guy that everyone was shooting for at every meet. I wanted to be the guy to beat, I wanted guys to push me to be my best because that was my role the past couple of years and I know how it feels to be that guy that's chasing someone who is just a little better than you, a little quicker than you or just a little stronger than you.. I was so close the past couple of years finishing just a tick behind some great athletes and just like in football, anything can happen at any time. Just like in football more times than not,Track & Field truly is a game of inches and individual performances and you have to be ready to respond physically, mentally and emotionally. That's what I wanted.. to be able to perform, to be prepared to respond when I needed to, to be able to WIN!!
At the end of the day it's up to you.. You have to Get Up, You have Dress UP, You have to Show Up and You have to Step Up.... And, I JUST LIKE TO THROW HEAVY $h%t..
I worked hard on my throwing and technique. I stayed in the weight room and I put in the time in the cold and the wind and the rain and snow this past winter, and I put in the time in the heat and rain this spring/summer and it paid off... I succeeded in accomplishing my goals and finished the year with a couple of new PR's. I went to Nationals (only one of two in school history) and competed against 50 of the best High School throwers in the world and I had a blast. It's a great feeling. BECAUSE I WANTED TO DO IT AND I DID IT!!
Congratulations to you Josh, to your family and to the Fighting Blues community..
Josh is now the 2nd in as many years to be offered and accept a Division I Scholarship to go on to throw in college.. Not too shabby for a couple of small town "Big Time Kids" from a small town nestled here in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains..
And as always, GO BLUE!!
