Wanted to get some clarification on pass interference rule in high school. I have been told that unlike college or pros, in high school pass interference hinges on contact while ball is in the air and there is not the consideration, as at other levels, as to whether the pass is catchable. Is that accurate?

Technically, whether a ball is catchable is not a consideration in high school.

The ball has to be thrown in the area of a receiver -- meaning a pass thrown toward one guy will not draw a flag if a guy elsewhere on the field is interfered with.

That said, I think it's safe to say that a player who makes contact with an opponent will be given a lot more leeway if that contact didn't prevent the guy from getting to a ball.

Thanks.....

and I would agree with leeway. Much akin to whether any actual advantage was gained on the play.

Re: Thanks.....

Exactly. It' the difference in knowing the rules and knowing how to call a game. You can see something all day long, but whether or not it should be called is a different question entirely.

Pass interference is one of the hardest. Even the easy ones aren't cut and dry. I honestly think it takes at least five years (probably more) experience to know how to call holding.

Re: Thanks.....

and most holds occur 20-30 yards away from ball on opposite side of field and have no effect on the play.
