Pick em Week 1 Comments

Unrelated, but what exactly is Sherando doing this year? A few fun games and that is it?

I forgot to mark them. We have 4 as usual. 2 East 2 West.

Hermitage (C5) vs Varina (C5)*
Monacan @ Manchester*

GW Danville @ Lord Botetourt (Sat)*
LCA (C3) @ Brookville (C3)*
Great picks for game of the week Mike. Varina/Herm is probably the biggest game in Henrico County until Deep Run plays Highland Springs. Loser could very well miss the playoffs in week 1. Same goes with Monacan/Manchester.

Agreed. I wouldn't mind seeing that one myself. Reminds me to ask, do you know of any streaming for Seminole teams? Is everything NFHS? Amherst has a YouTube site.
Amherst does YouTube, but it works better on Facebook last time I watched a game.

LCA streams via Facebook and they have commentary, but the video quality isn’t the best.

Not sure what JF and Liberty are doing, but everyone else does NFHS.

I wish Glass and Heritage would do YouTube like they’ve done in previous years.

Chuck Vipperman is broadcasting GW with video-all games.

Is Coach Bedwell at the helm at Hermitage?
Coach Bedwell is back and he has the majority of his staff from Bird including his DC and offensive line coach from those great Bird teams. Has 3 very good RBs (two sophomores and a senior with 3 D2 offers) and they return every starter on the offensive and defensive lines. A lot of people in the 804 are saying Varina or Deep Run vs the Springers for the Region but don’t be surprised to see another Bedwell/Johnson regional title game. Herm and Varina is going to be a very good game Monday night.

I'm sure Coach Bedwell will field a formidable team. Having so many of his former assistants is huge, especially in a year like this. I'm sure that it hurts him a little that a fair amount of talent left as a result of that fiasco of a season in 2019.

I told someone the other day that I feel like the gap between the good teams and the not so good teams will be significantly wider this season. My theory is that the consistently good teams are led by coaches that simply prepare better. Whether it be getting and keeping the kids engaged and involved in conditioning, or staff meetings to evaluate their talent, or spending time learning new and better coaching schemes, the good coaches never rest. For a lot of reasons, (many fully legit), a lot of teams virtually start from scratch each year. Never can I remember a time when preparation had more importance.

The usual good teams will be nothing less than dominating this year, in my opinion. Coach Bedwell may not have a track record of any consequence at Hermitage, but pity the fool that takes his abilities lightly.

Thanks for the info on Hermitage.

Just out of curiosity why is LB such a heavy favorite over GW? Only 1 person picked GW. I don’t think this game will be close for GW! I understand that LB has a great coaching staff is that what I’m missing?

I think it’ll be closer than people expect. LB isn’t Salem in terms of being able to match up with athletic teams. I picked LB cause I have my doubts that we can stop Hunter and we haven’t been in the weight room like LB has. Hopefully I’m totally wrong.

I definitely think preparation & line play will be the difference. That's why I picked LB.

GW will have to control the line of scrimmage. This is LB's strength.

GW plays poorly against physical teams, LB plays poorly against speed. LB is in the Jeff Highfill school of coaching where they find a guy to run the ball 400 times a season and that's their offense, if you can force them out of this and into a shootout they fare poorly, all but one of their losses in the last three seasons came from teams forcing them to keep up and them being ill-equipped to do so.

Magna vista actually plays William byrd at home on Sat. Schedule changed last week. Halifax will be 3-19
Thank you for letting me know. When I posted the games it was listed on the schedule with MV/HC. A lot of changes have been made in the last week, and unfortunately I'm sure there will be other changes.

I’ll toot my own horn.. I’m perfect in pick em this week. I really should have the VA Preps Hall Of Fame beside my “banned” profile but whatever.

@1MoreHokie GW’s biggest problem is they can’t tackle and play a bunch of weenie hut junior teams for 6 weeks before playoffs. Won’t find a bigger supporter than me, but you can’t have 2-3 very good players who come to play and 8 others who are soft as baby $hit when it actually matters. GW couldn’t stop Leftwitch last November, I don’t see them stopping Hunter Rice. Botty will more than likely push them around and it’ll be a long Saturday for the Danville boys. Hopefully I’m wrong. Saw a few GW players joke that they could barely get half of their max from last year on Facebook. SMH.. I hope and wish GW beats the absolute hell out of Botty and Salem, I also hope I’m a billionaire one day...

You see that hit??
I did! I will say that the player who got hit may be 5’4 140 and ran a horrible route, completely stopped while the defender was coming full speed.

I think a good question to ask you and others is do you think Botty is a powerhouse? I’d say no. Powerhouse= Salem, Highland Springs, Lake Taylor, Westfield, Appomattox... I’d say Heritage and Hopewell are more of a “powerhouse” than Botty.

That hit looked nice on camera though. At least he got a touchdown in though.

They have to win a state championship before they're considered a powerhouse. They are very close to powerhouse status though. Coach Harless has been building for years. Knocked on the door in 2015, couldn't handle the speed of Magna Vista. 2016 couldn't handle the Blacksburg speed the second time around. 2017, Staunton River. 2018 Heritage got them in the state semis. 2019, Hopewell speed was too much.

With the development in the weightroom(size), and the guys coming form other places(speed) It looks like LB is putting the pieces together. They will compete with Hopewelll this year, and could possibly beat them. Who knows? LB is loaded for the next several years and could place themselves in the powerhouse conversation in the next couple of seasons.

I can't think of a time when it seemed so easy to predict a state championship game as it is this year with class 3A. Sure their can be upsets but it seems like Hopewell and LB are in a different world than everyone else.

Wouldn’t count out Brookville or even Heritage either. I think both could give Botty fits. LCA could do some damage too!

I feel you. Brookville proved they could hang with LB last year. If they could get past Heritage, they should give LB a game. I don't think LCA is there yet depth wise, but a Zach Rice/Gunner Givens matchup would be one for the ages! Heritage and LB will be must see State semi game for years to come.

I could see it with Heritage and possibly Brookville but I think they would destroy LCA and it wouldn't even be competitive. I actually think 3A is very strong this year at the top but those two teams (LB and Hopewell) are just so loaded and would be competitive for a State Championship in 4A this year.

Don’t know what is going on with Magna Vista (lost to Byrd??? That was a very weird loss) but they have the talent, size and athletes to compete with/beat Botty. Things could change but after that loss to Byrd, I’m not counting on it.

This type of season comes with a lot of
Things going on behind the scenes

1. Veteran teams have an advantage in
This type of season

2 also a lot of schools are dealing with major eligibility issues with this Virtual schooling

3 local school boards all have different rules
About when practices could start and Weight room use

4 first Pandemic in 100 years

5 Parents react differently to letting their kids play some teams have more opt outs than others

6 so all it takes with some teams are some eligibility issues and some opt outs by Parents
And closure of the weight room to totally effect
Their season

Cal Naughton is right. Lots of opt-outs. For various reasons. I coach a spring sport, and I just hope I have enough to play.
