Yesterday was the first time I've really ever paid attention enough to notice a team not on the field for the national anthem. Brunswick sent their captains out but that is all. I was listening to the Giles game on the radio last week and heard the announcers mention that Giles normally isn't on the field for it either.

Do most schools not do this? I just feel its a little disrespectful to not be out on the field for the national anthem

It's about half and half at Richlands. If they aren't out on the field, they do come out of the field house and stand on the hill though. So they are always out there, but they aren't always on the field. Captains always on the field.

Page sends their captains down to the field. The rest of the players are up on the hill.

That seems perfectly fine to me. Yesterday Brunswick stayed in the locker room and as soon as the anthem ended then they came out. That I'm not okay with

Both teams should be on the sidelines for national anthem, with helmets off, in my opinion (for what that's worth lol).

Something that pisses me off so much is seeing people talking and joking around while the anthem is being played. I mostly notice this at basketball games, with students.

I'm the same way Keith. I think it's why I was so upset to notice Brunswick stay in the locker room until the anthem ended

My thought is that players need to be present during the National Anthem, outside the field house or on the sidelines! When I played we were on the sideline, elbow to elbow with our helmets under our arms. It's not just the playing of the Anthem to get the game under way, but it is paying respect to the many that have fought to provide us the opportunity to pay respect to our flag and enjoy high school football. Go Big Red.

Riverheads is in the locker room during the national anthem but they are well aware the anthem is being played and stand dead silent. And yes some folks don't stop but down towards the concession stand some people don't here it until they realize everyone is standing facing the flag.

I even noticed at a Riverheads JV game this year, the varsity team stopped practicing on the adjoining practice field and stood silently while the anthem was being played at the JV game.

I can back this up 100% as I've heard him do it a few times. I think it's awesome that he does that personally.

Trevor, does any one know what they were doing in the locker room during the playing of the Anthem?

I'm not too sure honestly. I know as soon as it ended then they ran out of the locker room, did what they do to psych themselves up, then ran on the field.

I just feel that you should be on the field during the game for the national anthem

Somewhat depends on the timing of the National Anthem. At Giles it is played about 10 minutes before game time. The locker room for both teams is not directly adjacent to field since we don't have a field house. Both teams come out and the starters for either offense or defense are announced and run onto the field as that happens and then we have coin toss. Just the way its been done. The configuration of the fence around the field which separates the field and bleachers makes it hard for the band to get off the field quickly. Don't think it has anything at all to do with the players wanting or not wanting to be on the field for the anthem. I could be wrong but I don't think the players are on the field at VT when the anthem is played either.
