Top 8 from each region, they play it put, Region A winner plays Region B winner and Region C winner plays Region D winner, a/b winner plays c/d winner.

But I believe only 4 will make from Region B with only 5 eligible teams in 1a

On the VHSL website only A and D are listed at 8, B and C do not have anything listed for how many teams. I would imagine C goes with 8 and as Gunz said, probably going to have to be 4 from region B.

Does power points decide home field

If i remember correctly, of course points does for each region, but I think a/b and c/d is predetermined but not sure. Back before the 16 team East and West playoffs of past several years, we had the 4 regions and it was always a/b and c/d and the semifinal game rotated each year.

But as I understand it, it will rotate in future years so A would play C next year and d the following or vice versa

Yes that's what I remember rotating but what you say is true about rotating a,b,c and d you think it would be based upon points

I don't understand how it is fair to give Region B teams what amounts to a bye. The number of teams per region needs to be even.

It's not really but that is the agreement that is in place and agreed upon by the powers to be from the member schools. Each region has the power to get their champion however they see fit basically.

VHSL should write format for all regions, not delegate down. I believe it's possible for some teams to go winless, and still make playoffs, while other teams could go 6-4 or maybe 7-3 and not make playoffs. The regions should be evenly balanced across the state, from Lee County to Eastern Shore.

It is stupid for all regions not to be the same. everyone is after the same trophy, therefore , all should travel same road.

Why do Rappahannock County, Chincoteague, and Nelson County play the season knowing they can not advance to playoffs? Will the other schools in their district just not play them? Something seems wrong about that also, I don't understand why this would be happening.

Competitive balance I assume. NC basically said that in the paper when they dropped the district schedule. Rapp Co would have a pretty tough district schedule, would probably not win a game. Chincoteague would only have to add two schools to be eligible for the playoffs since they only play in a 4 team district.
It makes sense from Rapp Co. and NC standpoint. Have a chance to have a winning season even if it means having no opportunity at playoffs over being eligible but not making it because they don't win a district game. Chincoteague would be a playoff team most years even if they lost 3 district games because the rest of their schedule is private schools.

I've pondered this question for years. My guess is that it evolved on the heels of several severe issues. I like to believe that it happened because of well meaning and well intended administrators trying to do the right thing for the kids. I disagree, but not being privy to the situation when a decision was made by these schools, (to forgo any possible post season involvement), I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. But, I see it as counter-productive.

Back in 2011 Rappahannock County had to scrap their varsity team for a year due to lack of numbers, and the main goal there is probably just to keep the program afloat and avoid throwing freshmen out on the field against much bigger schools. They are so much smaller than the other teams in their district that they aren't really competitive in anything, and with football being a numbers-heavy sport it's hard to see them ever competing.

TJ of Fairfax County isn't playing a full district schedule this year and they're 5A. No wins since October 18, 2013 (when they beat now-6A power Madison!) and losing 48-0 to the second-worst team in the area last year will do that...

you can't divide them equally geographically when the dividing line for east and west used to be blackburg roughly....

It's really doesn't matter because until you get down to the final 4 or maybe the final 8 in some select instances the early rounds of 1A have 99% of the time been beatdowns.

2A it's a different story but that's the reality of 1A

What's better? Everything for everyone being equal, or a team capable of winning getting left out because a region in a classification is small? It's just like the argument over past few years which playoff system was better since you had teams with losing records making the playoffs, while before there were teams 9-1 missing the playoffs
