Rustburg defeats Poquoson 6-3 State 3A Semi-finals
Rustburg will advance to the 3A State championship game after defeating Poquoson 6-3 at Liberty University. The Red Devils scored five runs in the 6th inning to take the lead and Drew Calohan threw a complete game to get the win.
Trailing 3-1 entering the top of the 6th, the Red Devils turned the game around with five straight hits.
An error at shortstop allowed one run in to cut the lead to 3-2 which put runners on 1st & 3rd still with no outs. A single by Warren Lamberth tied the game at 3-3 and back-to-back singles by Zac Bryant and Josh Cambell push the Rustburg margin to 5-3. The next batter, Hunter Metz, hit a pop-up that appeared to be headed foul but the ball landed safe for a double scoring another run.
Both teams scored in the 1st inning with Rustburg scoring after Calohan led off the game with a triple. Poquoson answered with three runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning with third baseman Trey Hicks delivering a 2-run single. Hicks would scoring the Islanders finals run after a single by Travis Cannella.
Hicks would take the loss after relieving Cole Jackson in the 6th inning. Hicks allowed two earned runs while getting only one out. Jackson completed five innings while striking out six and walking two.
Calohan pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts and only four hits allowed.
