14-0 Riverheads. Prayers for the Poquoson quarterback. Was taken to the hospital by ambulance after a hit on the sideline.

I was waiting to see if there was an update on that young man that was injured but either way I hope he has a speedy recovery.

As already mentioned, the Poquoson quarterback was injured early in the game and of course everyone hopes he makes a speedy recovery. Unfortunately for the visitors, that took them completely out of their game plan and they never recovered. Making matters even worse is the fact that several other bad breaks hit them in the first half and allowed Riverheads to take control of the game.

Before all that misfortune, RHS sophomore running back Jonathan Talbott had the best run of the day for the Big Red as he got to the home sideline and turned on the afterburners for about a 50 yard gain to put the home team in the red zone. (More on him shortly.)

Soon after that big run, Triple C scored the first of his three touchdowns and RHS was on the board 7-0 less than five minutes into the game. Shortly after that, the injury to the QB occurred. Once he was out of the game, the Islanders of course suffered in terms of timing and execution, and early in the second quarter, that showed when they fumbled in the backfield. RHS' Caleb Weston scooped it up and had an easy 25 yard run to paydirt to make it 14-0 after Zac Brooks' PAT.

Things went from bad to worse before halftime for Poquoson when Brendon Fortune made a diving interception on a pass that bounced off the receiver around midfield. That allowed the Big Red to drive in for TD number three, which Cook Cash scored. It was announced at that time to a standing ovation that he had just set a Riverheads record with 101 career touchdowns, breaking Zac Smiley's previous record of 100. Fittingly he was in the crowd today to see his record broken.

Poquoson received the second half kickoff and momentarily showed some spark as they quickly moved into Gladiator territory. But RHS rose to the occasion and stopped them. Later in the quarter, Brooks connected on a 37 yard field goal for the only score of the period to make it 24-0.

As play moved into the fourth quarter, Fortune got a well-deserved touchdown as he had given the Gladiators some valuable yardage from his fullback spot, not only today but all season. That score made it 31-0 early in the fourth.

The Big Red's final touchdown came on their second scoop and score of the afternoon, this one covering about 80 yards by Cook Cash. Once he recovered the fumble, he had to break the tackle of the closest Islander, but after that, there was no one within 20 yards of him as he took it to the house.

Brooks missed that PAT, although it wasn't obvious from the stands what was wrong with it, but nevertheless, that put a running clock into effect, something no one thought we would see in this one. But it did not last long as the long TD from Green just under the two minute mark took us back to regular timing. RHS then just took some knees to end the game.

So the Big Red will be off to the state finals for an astonishing ninth straight year, with Radford awaiting us on Saturday. As of the moment, fingers crossed, the weather sounds great for that 11:30 kickoff. I am sure that one will be discussed at length this upcoming week, but it certainly sounds as if it will be a complete contrast in styles.

As expected, CCC will get most of the press for his three touchdowns today. I did not listen to the post game report on the radio, but I certainly hope those guys either gave their player of the game honors to Talbott or at least considered doing so. He may not have scored today but he was the primary running back in terms of number of carries, no doubt an intentional strategy to take the focus off CCC. I would certainly assume he topped the 100 yard mark easily, if not 150.

Whenever the Gladiators needed the tough yards today, they went to either him, Fortune, or quarterback Levi Dunlap for one of his sneaks that have a way of turning into 8-10 yard gains. And of course hats off also to the Big Red defense, which had the shutout going until the last two minutes.

After the game, the next big event in Greenville was the second round of the Gladiator Tip Off Tournament, which also went well overall for the Big Red. Read all about that in the 2-A Winter thread.

We did co-honors. If CCC hadn't had that scoop and score we would have had just Talbot. The Sophomore killed it with 186 yds.
Gonna need him and CCC to have big games next week. Might also need big ones out of Dunlap, Fortune, Roberts, Brooks, Weston, and the Kitchen Sink against that Bobcat attack.
