Just wondering how everyone’s preseason predictions turned out.

1). Riverheads and Essex look to be great.
2). GW seems overrated. Need to figure things out going into the Playoffs.
3). Narrows is a nice surprise.
4). Galax seems to be at their best going into the Playoffs, per usual.

GW seems to be the biggest surprise this year.

Very fair assessment GW has all the talent they need it's just not clicking at all. Plus we've had more walk away and the ones who chose to play else where or not at all has put a damper on our ablity.

1). I think the "talent" may be A LOT of hype. GW is talented, but I don't believe they're as talented as Essex, they don't have the discipline or mental toughness of RH, they don't have the physicality of Galax. You want to see A LOT of TALENT? Watch Essex.

2). The fact that you keep bringing up kids that aren't playing or went some where else is just old. They chose not to play or quit OR they are playing with some other team. It's over. It's done with. Move on.

3). I still see GW creating some noise in the Playoffs.

I talk about the kids who left or didn't play because we definitely would've been much better of they had. And yes our talent is down alot this year but we still have more than enough to beat alot of the C and D teams. And yes Essex is an extremely talented team this year and could easily give RH a run. And to your final point I think GW could easily make the semi's again but Galax is more than likely the opponent across the field and they are our foil.

Glad so many of non faith counted Generals off.
Appomattox and Thomas Jefferson put points on board.
Just remember the Name come December in Salem.
You better have passing and rushing team.
Once the Generals learn how tackle like Dan River game .they are hard to be beating.
Last regular season game this Friday Chatham.
Playoff time Coach Broggins will be ready for battle test

Essex played Thomas Jefferson in game 5. Essex won 38-30. With about 8 min in the 3rd, it was Essex winning 24-3. With 1 1/2 minutes in the 4th, Essex was winning by 14...38-24.

I am not sure why you are offended by WC not being mentioned here. I personally do not see them as a surprise good or bad. They are having the season I think most expected. I have stated in other threads that teams will not want to face WC come playoff time. I do not think they can hang with Essex or Sussex from the east but I believe it would be a good game between them and RH if it happens. Of course that is just my humble opinion.

While here, Galax is gonna be a problem for whoever represents A and B. I do not see any other team out west that can beat them come playoff time and Coach Dixon has those young men believing they can run through walls.

Playoffs do not always go chalk when looking at the seedlings but the cream will rise to the top for sure. And another point is that generally one of the top 4 win it so it is what it is. There are exceptions but then there is the data.

Those 2 backs can and do run through walls lol

1 player, not players. Kids, parents, administrators met together. VHSL took no action since schools handled it. Unfortunate incident. Out one game so far, not sure if more. Play ball. Good luck to all.

Players get kicked off teams for that kind of behavior?

In 2004 at Northwood I will always remember it, the fans calling names more than the players, but we handled business and got out of town.

It was common on away games when George Wythe went on those little windy roads back into the mountains when I played.

Hell a few of us would figure out the name of the QB's girl and I think it was against Grayson Co. we had the QB crying because we knew more about her than he did.

I can't image the situation where things said on the field would become such a big deal off the field. Are kids polite out there these days?

When a player would spit in our face and call us names we wore them out, they never made the final whistle, we would make sure that player quit because he no longer wanted to be hit.

Just saying we never complained to our mothers.

We took care of it on the field!

Thanks for pointing out that this was ONE player, not more than one. As Keith pointed out, the administrations of both Staunton City and Augusta County (meaning the superintendents) got involved and handled it in a very professional manner. The newspaper of course wanted to sell papers so that is why they got involved to the degree they did.

I think the reason it got so much publicity is due to the fact that there were messages sent to the Lee player after the game (by the RHS player's girlfriend, that expanded upon and defended the name calling ) so there was physical evidence. That caused a local media frenzy for a few days as there were hundreds, maybe even thousands of shares/retweets/comments/reactions on the Lee player's facebook/twitter post and the newsleader article/facebook page. I'm pretty sure they had 5 online articles about it (I dont get the print copy during the week anymore so not sure of any others). The original story, the reactions from the community, an interview with the Lee player, a proposed way to handle the situation, and the resolution. There may have been more, but those are the ones I can recall.

Not that it was ever right to say offensive things to people, but in this day in time, you cant expect to get away with saying anything someone could interpret as offensive. The fact that the girlfriend sent those messages after the boyfriend/player made the racial slur verbally, kind of gave the evidence the paper needed to make it a story imo.

I can remember hearing offensive things said during games since I played many moons ago, but I'm kind of like you, I never took anything said during the game to heart, as I treated every opponent as an enemy during the games, so whatever was said during games meant nothing to me personally. I don't, however, condone or support people saying things like that at anytime, just for the record.

Media always trying to create drama. Glad it was handled.

The Media didn't "create drama". They covered it. Maybe they covered it too much for your liking, but the Media didn't make up the fact that the kid called another kid a name.

Glad to see the younger generation is staying classy. Kudos!

You work for the paper?

Who all heard the kid say it? Not to say he didn’t. I know there is one kid that runs to the refs every play with accusations and is actually making it up.

Do I work for the paper...?

Oh boy. No. I don't work for the paper.

Let's hear how the media "created" something again....

This site is going downhill......common trends include; fans blaming coaches, administrators, and now....the media.

Utterly speechless.

It appears you are defending the paper but bashing others. I am probably wrong again , but that is Ok. Have a Great Day God loves us all!

Media just covering something and not embellishing on anything ever. Hmmm interesting.

People complaining that the Media covered something that doesn't coincide with their own agenda. Hmmm interesting.

I am guessing if the kid never called the other kid a name, the Media wouldn't have covered it. But.....I'm guessing you believe that they would have made it up, right?

You know the easiest way for the Media to not cover content.....don't give them any.

I love the logic of, "Well, yeah I did this.....but they Media is blowing it way out of proportion." Yeah.....just a heads up, you aren't anyone to tell anyone else what is considered what.

A little piece of advice, grow up, kids are watching. Society doesn't need anymore people thinking other people blow their problems out of "proportion".

Embellishing is not covering up. Who has an agenda? Would someone be naive to think the news never crosses a certain line?

Let's go back to the original point, alright?

Don't give the Media something to cover. The kid called the other kid a name. End of discussion. The Media can chose to cover however they see fit.

Now instead of placing the spotlight on the Media for "embellishing" let's teach the child what is right and wrong, how calling names can be detrimental to another, and how ignorant they sound using racial slurs.

Let's focus on something we can control (educating the child on what should and shouldn't be done on and off the field). You can't control the Media, all you can do is gripe about what they cover and if they are "embellishing". We can also control what we give them to cover.

Fair?
