With all the changes the last few years (since around 2013), I am seeking some clarification and understanding for this season's sports tournaments.

Thanks NNDman for reporting about some of the changes-

Okay, is this the correct setting for the 1A tournaments for at least the 2016 season? (I understand more changes may be on the way for next school year, but lets get this one straight.) ----

1A East's 4 conferences will send 2 teams each to the East region for a total of 8 teams. (same for 1A West). No change there.

Of those 8 teams, the top 4 will automatically advance to the state playoffs (new, but how it used to be, sort of...) Basically, if you win the 1A region Quarterfinal games, you make states. The next games (plus a consolation game) in the two Regions are for state tournament seeding purposes and to crown the 1A East and West champs?

1A East and West send those 4 teams each to states for a total of 8 like it once was for many years.

Is this tournament the same format that will be used for Basketball, Soccer, Baseball and Softball this season?

Thanks in advance!

I'm of the impression that state tournament quarterfinals are strictly for basketball. There were no quarterfinals in volleyball so I'm pretty certain that round will not be played in any tournaments this spring.
But you know what really stinks? The Northern Neck District (or Rappahannock River Conference if you prefer as I refuse to refer to it by that #) is not holding basketball semifinals in a single venue. Another tradition by the wayside. It happened last spring in baseball/softball. I suspect the powers that be feel there will be more revenue by playing at two sites. I would suggest you'd better be there early at Northumberland Thursday night since that gym seats maybe 600??? Looks similar to Essex's and that's about capacity there.

It is a bummer that if all plays out as expected (the higher seeds win in the NND or RRC), Northumberland and Essex will knock each other out before regions. Am I correct here? Especially with the East Region sending 4 teams to states.

The top 4 teams in all of 1A East are Lancaster, Altavista, Essex & Northumberland. 3 are from the NND. The NND (RRC) should be seeded very high in Region tournament, unlike how the NND was screwed in the volleyball seeding (as was Mathews).

The West is very strong this year. They will be tough to beat. It would be nice to send the best against them.

Yes. W&L last hosted in 2003 and Northumberland in 2010. It's been at Lancaster since as Northumberland downsized its gym when it built the new school.

I think this thread helps clarify some confusion out here in the Valley. Our AD (who certainly should know) has been telling me all along that our Conference 44 will send only its top two teams into the 1-A East Region playoffs. That seems to coincide with what you guys are saying on here.

As of today, Tuesday, our conference semi-finals are set for tomorrow night, with # 4 Riverheads traveling to # 1 Altavista and # 3 William Campbell traveling to # 2 Luray. So if he (and you guys) are all right, then the winners of those two games will play Friday for the conference title and both will advance to the regionals, whereas the losers of the two Wednesday night games will be finished for the season.

However, our local paper keeps saying that there is a consolation game Friday night and that Riverheads clinched a regional berth last Friday when they beat Stonewall. I think they are just using other conferences that DO send four teams on to regionals as their example and they are just assuming that all conferences send four teams on. So do you guys think that all of us are correct (that only two will advance) and that this paper is simply wrong?

Problem solved already!!!!!!!!! As soon as I posted this message, I checked the paper again. They have already amended the article (online at least) that appeared today in the paper, and now we are all in agreement that only the top two teams will advance from Conference 44.

There will be a consolation game at Cumberland High School for the Region 1A east - Saturday the 27th starting at 12:00 (girls 1st, then boys). Then the championship games will be played that evening in a 2nd session.
