That gretna team was something special and I dont know if any Appo team would have beat them. That offense was GREAT!

I will say that the opinions of a few fans on here does not reflect the opinions of the Appomattox players or coaches. They respect every opponent and take no one lightly. That's one of the reasons they continue to dominate every opponent. It doesn't matter if their opponent is win-less or undefeated, they all get the same respect and effort in preparation.
The 2002 William Campbell team beat Vic Hall and company in route to a 14-0 season and state champions. Hands down the best high school football team I’ve ever seen.
That WC team was something special too! Vic was young and still finding himself then. I still say he is the best athlete in area to start all four years in HS and accomplish what he did.
Number 55, Phillpot for Glenvar can take over a game. Better get him blocked. He will be 4th best athlete on the field. He is great.

I saw that WC vs Gretna game when WC stormed out the gates and Gretna came back after Horrace Hubbard made that vicious hit in the back field the game changed and Gretna dominated from that point on.
LOL....notice you didn’t mention the next 2 years against Vic. 2003 Best team I’ve ever seen including the 2002 WC team. The difference was not only did Gretna have Vic but they had Moon and Hubbard on defense.....2 absolute studs.

That’s what made Gretna so special.....had a defense with Hubbard and Moon that was as good as any team. And then you add to that an Offense with Vic Hall.
Didn't WC go up like 28-0 and Gretna still won in a blow out? I may be wrong but it started lopsided if I remember.
Coach Smith been a little slow at calling the dogs off this year. Shoot...I seen most the starters in vs Giles in the 4th qtr...then he slowly started swapping them out. I have noticed he kept them in longer this year...dont know reasoning.
Rewards I'm wondering why the Fri night game given that VT-UVA play at 8:00. I'd think a lot of people want to see both games. Narrows and Galax in 1A are playing Sat. afternoon.

1. Appo obviously had the single wing's number. Once Appo stopped the single wing, Giles had nothing left to go to. Giles is one dimensional, and proud of it. I've heard "Pound the rock" over and over this year.
2.. Giles defense was good but not stellar this year. Even opinions on here from Giles fans have said so more than once.
Analysis: Appo shut down the wing and exploited a defense that was not that good setting up momentum, many possessions, home crowd atmosphere....=lopsided win.
3. Why Glenvar is different than Giles.
Glenvar is a very balanced team offensively and match up better against Appo than they do Giles. They have one of the best defenses and lines Appo will have faced this year. Finally...The game is at Glenvar. Glenvar has their work cut out to beat a great Appo team, but Glenvar has a good chance of pulling off the upset if they play their best game of the year.

I wish it were on Sat. too. I'm torn as I've got close connections to members on both Glenvar and VT. I wish the colleges would let high schools have their Friday nights to themselves. On the one hand the college coaches come with hat in hand to high schools wanting good players and then they undercut the high school gate and fan support by scheduling games on Friday. ridiculous!
Giles didn't help itself at all starting on the first series with mistakes and penalties. Giles struggles when it gets behind the chains. The game plan was to keep Appo's offense off the field. I wouldn't say they shut down the wing because we could pick up yardage in spurts but couldn't maintain a drive. We had zero answer for their offensive speed so even if we played out absolute best game, we can't match them score for score.
If you can contain their speed, (and that's a big if for any team) and can get a couple of turnovers, then you have a chance. And if I'm wrong, I like my crow with bbq sauce!
On another note it's good to see both Clifford and Mann doing well at Ferrum.
Your post makes a lot of sense my friend. However I would not say Appo shut down the singlewing. Giles actually moved the ball pretty well. Just killed themselves with penalties on good drive's. It seemed all night they were behind the chains 15 to 20 yards. Just can't overcome that against Appo. As far as defense your are correct, I more then any have said all year it was Giles weakness. However it was good enough to beat Glenvar at thier house. Starting a freshman and sophomore at linebacker showed all year but looks good for the future. I do think Glenvar plays them closer because of the defensive front. I still think it could be a three score game. Giles actually played well against Graves but he still made amazing plays. If u try to take away the dive with number 11, who is great then the Qb kills u with keepers. He also runs and runs well and is the best passer I have seen in a long time. Is it impossible for Glenvar to win? Heck no, it's just not probable. Like I stated earlier they are just on a different level right now. They have been the last three years. I plan to attend the game Friday. Would not mind to meet up and watch the game with you.
This is a good assessment and yes the Giles fans are correct. For the most part they were stopped but with the mistakes the big plays were neutralized. They did get some big plays off. Many were in 4th with reserves in. They did periodically make some big gains throughout the game. I think RB had over 220 rushing. I think only thing that stops appo is a consistent passing attack.
I would love to watch the game with you Winger. I usually sit between the band and the hill side of the stadium about the 30, at or near the top. Look for a really good looking guy in his 60's with a light blue, baseball hat and red coat. Holy crap...I'll look like a Giles fan lol.

One thing to consider when looking at Appo score is they always pull starters once game is in hand and you never see what the score could have been. Their scores can be very misleading. Dan River game was never close. Giles 14 points leads you to think they hung with them. but consider this many of the starters were done at halftime or early 3rd qtr. Graves never played in the 2nd half. Glenvar & Appo has the makings to a good one but after last Friday the Appo defense looked similar to last years. There offense is as good as the last 2 years. One last note, the first team offense has punted 2 maybe 3 times all year.
That is simply not true. Six minutes left in the game and your up 45 to 14 and the starters come back out on offense. Graves might not have played 4th quarter but in stating he did not play second half is a pure lie. I was scratching my head that late in the game thinking what is thier coach doing taking a chance on getting someone hurt. Much respect for that team but do not post false things.

While Appo was up 28-0 at the half the game was closer than that. Giles got shut down twice that could have made the game closer.

Graves played little if any on defense. Will have to watch game again. I kept looking to see when he was on the field Friday night.
Ive been saying for quite some time that Appo has been leaving starters in longer past two seasons. Doug was a lil bit safer with 2015s players. I applauded him for doing so numerous times on here. Last yr I noticed it more and this yr its been a lil ridiculous how long we have been keeping them in...I like the coaching staff but i am questioning why have we been doing this? Starters are in key positions onto the 4th qtr when game has been sealed.
As the season progressed he has left them in longer. It's a risk yeah, but I think it was needed to give them more time to get there game together. Alot and I mean alot of weak links have been eliminated.
Its not a statement, it is a fact graves did not play in the second half. In fact he didn't play any defense the whole game but believe me if the game was in question you would have seen all game on both sides. Most offensive players were gone by start of 4th quarter. and the defense was changing in the third. Giles first score had half of the starters in and the second score was the long TD run that had no starters on the field mostly 2nd & 3rd string, heck even some JV. As far scratching your head, the QB & Rb probably were out a little to long (early 4th qtr) 2 string QB ran 2 series and the 3rd string ran 1 series. Not trying to be smart, just stating this team so far could have scored much more all year and to look at their scores would be very misleading as to how good they really are.
Lord,... hoping for a great game, great atmosphere, great sportsmanship, no serious injuries, and some great plays. Nothing but respect for the Appo Raiders and what they have done for themselves and their community during very difficult times. We ask that the Glenvar players bring the best game of their lives. And finally Lord, bless the refs not to make too many of those stupid, bad calls.

Appomattox can score on any play any time, from anywhere on the field. Their defense is faster than most.

According to my quick calculations, Appo scores an average of 47 points a game and their defense gives up 18. Glenvar scores an average of 35 and gives up an average of 8. The numbers tell me that Glenvar can score enough points against Appo to win, if the defense plays really well, This game will be decided mostly on the edges as Glenvar should be strong in the trenches.
Coach Smith is NEVER about running up the score, he looks at trying to make sure the win is secure then he takes his starters out because his mind set is Salem. That is smart and I respect that. Also gives the 2nd team time to play in case they are called upon. SMART COACHING!!! Thats was a major factor why he has two Championships under his belt. There was many game he could have put 70+ on board but he's not that way, gotta keep the boys healthy and safe for the long road to the show.
