Lost in the shuffle of all the changes to venue:
  • The VHSL Rating Scale for football was altered. Teams in higher classifications will be awarded two bonus points per each separation in class when playing a school with a lower enrollment, regardless of whether it is a district or nondistrict game.
Previously, teams were awarded two points per classification for a district opponent and one per classification for a nondistrict foe.

This will take a little discussion to figure out all of the affects. My first thought is that it levels the playing field a bit.
For instance, let's say a team is the only 5a team in a district, and all other district teams are 4a or smaller. That 5a team collects a lot of extra points under the old system just because of district play. Another 5a team may have scheduled 3 or 4 non district games with smaller group level teams and received considerably less points.

Maybe on the surface, originally this looked like a good concession to limit the complaints about being stuck playing smaller district opponents. But the consequence was that it was putting some teams at a disadvantage, points wise.

Remember before you eat me alive, this is not my carefully thought-through opinion. Rather, it was a quick "first thoughts" musing.
