MICHELLE L. MITCHELL/ THE NEWS VIRGINIAN Jarvis Vaughan (10) flies to the basket in Richmond this fall.
Unfortunately, the Lee High head coach is going to have to wait a little longer to kick his regular season off as several players remain locked in with the Leemen football team during a deep postseason run themselves.
For now, Hatcher is working with the players he does have in the gym as he anticipated having eight to nine returners from a squad that captured the Group 2A state title a year ago.
The two biggest returners are Jarvis Vaughan— an Old Dominion commit and defending VHSCA player of the year — and point guard Jayden Williams.
“Practices have gone well,” Hatcher said. “I’m just ready to get started with the full team.”
Hatcher said that going into the season his goals are simple.
He hopes to win the district regular season in order to gain the automatic regional berth and then win the district tournament from there.
After that, everything else will fall in place.
“We want to dictate the tempo with our defense,” Hatcher said of his team. “Defensively we play a lot of varied defenses. We want to control the game defensively. Offensively, we want to be efficient and score on every possession. We want to score in transition as much as possible. We want to control the offensive tempo as well.”
Lee High was scheduled to start its season Tuesday night but now awaits for the end of football season before it can get going.
