So get this... the Fall of 2021 will see many changes in terms of the Richmond Region.
Region 5B now belongs to the 757 and we are now in Region 5C and the region has shrunk to 12 teams. In terms of the playoffs that means only four teams will not qualify.
There will be five new coaches in the region this season; Deep Run, Hermitage, Meadowbrook, Mills Godwin and Prince George.
Speaking of coaches... of the 7 coaches returning only two have been at their school for more than 3 seasons; Matt Hutchings(Midlothian) and Loren Johnson(Highland Springs). Here is how they stack up...
Loren Johnson, Highland Springs - 133-23 in 13 seasons...
Matt Hutchings, Midlothian - 18-20 in 4 seasons...
Bryan Jennings, Clover Hill - 15-13 in 3 seasons...
Troy Taylor, LC Bird - 15-13 in 3 seasons...
George Bland, Douglas Freeman - 9-7 in 2 seasons...
Perry Jones, Glen Allen - 9-7 in 2 seasons...
Phillip Sims, JR Tucker - 0-5 in 1 season...
Since realignment 2013 only four teams in Region 5C have a winning record...
95-9 - Highland Springs
72-22 - LC Bird
65-25 - Hermitage
56-27 - Douglas Freeman
37-41 - Mills Godwin
36-42 - Prince George
36-43 - Deep Run
29-50 - Glen Allen
27-51 - Midlothian
27-52 - Clover Hill
24-54 - Meadowbrook
19-55 - JR Tucker
Things look a bit different however when you look at the last 3 seasons...
34-2 - Highland Springs
19-9 - Deep Run
18-10 - Glen Allen
16-11 - Douglas Freeman
16-12 - Prince George
15-13 - Clover Hill & LC Bird
13-14 - Midlothian
11-16 - Hermitage
9-17 - Mills Godwin
1-23 - JR Tucker
0-24 - Meadowbrook
When it is all said and done though, it all comes down to the playoffs. Three schools in 5C have double digit wins in the playoffs but there are 3 schools that have never won in the playoffs and only 6 have a playoff win since the 2015 season... last win is in parenthesis...
45-32 - Highland Springs(2021)
38-30 - LC Bird(2018)
19-17 - Hermitage(2017)
8-10 - Meadowbrook(2008)
7-12 - Mills Godwin(1996)
6-11 - Douglas Freeman(2016)
3-5 - Deep Run(2019)
1-2 - Glen Allen(2018)
1-12 - Clover Hill(1986)
0-1 - JR Tucker
0-3 - Midlothian
0-3 - Prince George
So what is my point? Point being new coaches and a different look to the region means we might see some new participants in the playoffs, some teams win their first playoff game, some teams win for the first time in a long time. Should be a fun, different and interesting Fall for Region 5C.
