Region A Preseason Top Quarterbacks
- Marsel T. Mason
Usually the most important guy on the field, the quarterback can be quite essential to the success of a good team. Find a winning team and usually the quarterback is someone who makes wise decisions and is filled with talent. For the first time in over 3 years there is a change on whose the region’s top overall quarterback and there are some guys behind him who are very special in their own light.
No matter the classification, senior Darren Owens is one of Virginia's best behind center.
The undisputed leader in the region is senior quarterback Darren Owens of Brunswick who is dual-threat quarterback who can literally take over a game. Owens has steadily improved season after season and the expectation is for him to be even more polished and refined. He has a strong and accurate arm and draws comparison to the late Steve McNair with his ability to make defenders miss and produce big plays.
Darren Owens of Brunswick’s contest versus Liberty Christian will be huge. Expect the rest of the state and Mid-Atlantic region to find out what we already know from this one. Scouts have been asking about the dynamic quarterback and it will be interesting to see who is college of choice will be.
Behind Owens is junior signal caller Malik Delk out of Sussex Central. Delk had an outstanding offseason showcasing his great touch and ability to make the right read. Like traditional Tiger quarterbacks, Delk is mobile and is expected to be as dangerous out of the pocket as in. Sussex Central’s offensive success will relay heavily on the junior qb’s ability to get their offense back to the high scoring squad many are use to seeing.
Sussex Central’s Delk will have his big spotlight versus Trinity Episcopal and their pro-style qb Blake Bowen. Delk rose to the occasion in camps out gunning several big school qbs and appears to have the drive to make this season special. Many will be eager to see. Expect this season to be a breakout season for Delk.
Nelson is expected to fill in nicely for record breaking quarterback Dominik Broaddus departure.
Essex Tesahn Nelson is projected to be quarterback for the top ranked Trojans. Nelson played tight end and will be difficult to get down standing 6 foot 1, 210 pounds. With the top receiver in the region on his squad, Coach John Fulks squad should find life after record setting quarterback Dominick Broaddus an easy transition. Nelson will try to make up for lost time at the position as he has the size to play the position on the collegiate level. Look for him to show it in the big contests early.
Nelson’s spotlight for Essex will be plenty but if we must circle one contest then its in the hostile environment at James Monroe. If he can deliver big time for the Trojans then expect to see this young man step in immediately and deliver results.
King William’s Ryan Huffman is young but has all the ability to get the Cavaliers where they plan on going. The Cavalier triggerman has a strong arm and excellent technique. There may be some growing pains expected but don’t expect them to last long with a solid supporting cast. Next Friday’s scrimmage at Lafayette should rip the wrapping off the jewel of a qb who will likely be the best in the region in seasons to come.
Rounding out the top 5 is senior quarterback Zak Kent who is ready to take Northumberland further in 2015. Kent will be called upon make the Indians offense a threat. Wide receiver Taquan Smith is expected to be his go to receiver and they are pose to make a lot of magic this season.
At the end of the season we will revisit these rankings and see if these quarterbacks lived up to their preseason rankings or will there be some new names to take the honors. The hard work is putting put in now and you can expect to see these signal callers lead their team for a chance at a title.
