Trevon Hatch of Sussex Central finds daylight from a wall of blockers for big yardage.

SUSSEX- Colonial Beach was making it down south for the second week in a row and was hoping to change their fortunes this time. The Drifters started the game with a surprise onside kick which slithered just 10 yards to give them the ball at mid-field. Unfortunately, the Drifters would not be able to turn the recovery into points as the speed of the Tiger defense seemed overwhelming.

Colonial Beach would get a punt inside the 20 but combined with a penalty Sussex Central would start at their own 9-yard line. Soon after dual threat quarterback Malik Delk avoided several tackles and raced 67 yards for a touchdown and the 2-point conversion was good. Sussex Central went up 8-0 at the 8:41 mark in the first. After the defense clamped on the Drifters offense, Trevon Hatch would bust through from 2 yards out to make it 14-0 Tigers.

Malik Delk has developed into a lethal dual threat option quarterback for the Tigers.

The Tigers would not have the rhythm they had in the 1st quarter in the 2nd as Anajai Lewis would complete a long possession on 4th and goal stretching just over the goal line for the Drifters score. Lamar Lucas would race to the corner to cut the lead down to 6 with 5:08 left to play in the 2nd. The two would go into the half with a 14-8 score.

The Sussex Central defense continued to be stingy with the Drifters offense but soon their offense really got going as Hatch would explode for a 56-yard touchdown run to make it 22-8 Tigers with 2:23 left in the 3rd. Tyrese Rose would get a big interception return for a touchdown called back for a block in the back. That play would shut the door however on the Drifters chances as all of any momentum had departed.

Anajai Lewis (3) appeared to have some space but was closed in quicker by Amari Hill (5).

It wouldn’t be long as Delk would throw a perfect pass right over the shoulder of the defender into the hands of Pha’shard Harris for a 35-yard touchdown pass that would make it 30-8 Tigers with 8:37 left in the 4th. Less than 2 minutes later back up quarterback Clyde Edmonds threw a beautiful touchdown pass in the middle of the field to Rose for a 45-yard touchdown pass.

Hatch rushed for 199 yards and two touchdowns on the night. The Tigers finished with 332 yards rushing while the defense held Colonial Beach to 44 carries for 80 yards. The biggest area of improvement was penalties as the Tigers were flagged 15 times for 117 yards.

Sussex Central (3-0) will hit the road in Courtland to face off with 3A Southampton (2-1). Colonial Beach (1-2) will look to get back on the winning track as they host Chincoteague (3-1).
