of playoff participants per a recent vote by the VHSL executive committee. Will be interesting to see if 1A lowers the number of teams to 12 or 8 although I would prefer 12 and if they went 8 I would suspect their would be a bye week for all 8 teams following the conclusion of the regular season as the state championship dates are set in stone.

hopefully it's 12 instead of 8, but I didn't hate having 16. 8 is not enough.

12 has to be the minimum.

Keeps the 1-9's out and keeps the chances for actual upsets in. Lots of 9 seeds over 8 seeds it seems.

Having a bye for the top 4 is pretty good. The bottom four has landed an upset or two and they've been competitive as well. Of course there has also been blowouts. Its a tough decision to make. With no super dominant teams expected for the 2015 season this could be a critical vote.

True enough.

The problem is that for every 3-7 William Campbell team that tears up a few 9-1 squads, there are 3 Cumberlands or Craig Counties that get beat by 50 in the first round.

I will say that everyone always brings up the 3-7 William Campbell team and the 1-9 William Campbell team. The Generals play a very hard schedule and the fact that with those records they still made playoffs (which went by points) should reflect just how hard their schedules were. I am not saying that the "Old Dogwood" is the toughest district in the state, but the last couple years it has been very hard to win in that district unless you have an Altavista, Gretna and Dan RIver type team. Just look at the teams in the "Old Dogwood": Altavista, Gretna, Chatham, Appomattox, Dan River, Nelson, William Campbell. The last 12 years between these schools their have a combined 10 state championships. I am not a fan of the 16 team venue either, but I just think its unfair to judge a team just by their record without looking at the stength of schedule, because I am quite sure that just as you have that 1-9 team in the playoffs there will be and have been several 10-0, 9-1, and 8-2 teams in the playoff that really had no business in there, because their schedules are weak. There really isnt a formula for it in high school football.

So true. I always bring the Generals up because, like you say, they play in such a tough district that its hard to compare them to other parts of the state.

I'm okay with the setup now. Like I say, there will always be blowouts. But its always fun to see a team come through and shake things up the way William Campbell did a few years back.

Hope you're enjoying all those titles in A-Town! And good luck with your spring sports as well Knightfball11!

I don't love bad teams in the playoffs, but I don't see too much of an issue with a first-round blowout from time to time. If that's my team facing them, I'm enjoying the first-round bye without having to worry about shaking the rust off a week later.

Yes MMQP, it has been very nice to have these teams in Atown everyone in town has really embraced these kids. We have been very fortunate to have this group of young athletes to come through at the same time. Its rare to have 2 or 3 athletes like these kids in a 1A school let alone to have 8 or 9 all in the same class. I am very anxious to see what the future holds for Atown sports since this group will graduate.

Is Dawson going anywhere to play college ball? That young man is a beast, I was very thankful to get an opportunity to see him play this year and hope to see him play somewhere else in the future.

I am quite sure that PM will be back in the hunt next year because I know from my days playing at James River that yall probably have a Wheeler or two still coming through the system. LOL..... Good luckto the Blues.

Yea there must be 6 or 7 different clans of Wheelers in Buena Vista lol. Seems that way anyway. Did you play against Eric and Chris in high school? I assume so.

I havent heard anything more about Ryheem's plans after high school. I'm so far out of the BV loop it isnt even funny. If I hear anything I will post it on here though.

Do you keep up with James River anymore? If so, what do you think about the new hire at head coach?

I remember Chris, but not sure about Eric. My junior year at JR we were supposed to be the team to beat beacuse the senior class' JV squad went undefeated and we had Mike Godfrey as tailback. We ended up not fairing so well....funny how that works out huh?

I did keep up with JR a little while my kids were at Altavista because they went a couple years playing each other, but I havent paid much attention to them lately.

Eric was one of the tailbacks on those teams. Super fast.

Thats the one thing I always remember about James River, they always seemed to have the pieces for succesful teams there but things just never panned out for one reason or another. PM had that issue for years as well as far as great JV squads falling flat on their face once they hit varsity. The head coach now was the head coach of all those JV squads back then..we're all very thankful to have him.

It seems that basketball has always been the stronger sport in Botetourt County anyway. Even going back to the Fincastle, Troutville, Buchanan, Colonial and Eagle Rock days. I think Fincastle won a couple of "state titles" back in the 30's or 40's actaully.
