They lost their 2x state player of the year QB, their top 4 receivers - 2 of which were all state, an all state TE/DE, & their best running threat (who was one of the 4 receivers who played RB too).
They have excellent line play and a great defense but they don't have the playmakers on offense this year to go with them. If you take out the Lebanon game (who was probably the worst team in the state in 2a) they haven't scored more than 2 offensive touchdowns in any game all year. But at the same time their defense has kept them in every game going into the 4th quarter. Actually, all of their wins (minus Lebanon) against Gate City, Tazewell, & Virginia High were still competitive games until the 4th qt.
They've lost to 10-0 teams Bluefied, WV & Union --- 9-1 teams Blacksburg, Graham, William Byrd --- and lastly 8-2 Marion.
They're well coached and play hard. They have a sophomore kicker that imo is the best by far in SWVA. They just don't have the home run threats on offense you're used to seeing from Richlands the last 15 years. That being said they're still good enough to upset a team. I doubt they'll go to Union and win, and I wouldn't pick them over Graham in that hypothetical rematch, but I'd pick them as the 8 seed to beat seeds 3-7 in region D if they were to line up right now. It just a shame for them they drew Union first.
