Traditionally this has always been a dogfight, Union won 19-7 earlier this season, richlands has a much better QB now and a linebacker back off the injured list from what I understand. Don’t overlook them, this could be the biggest upset of 2017 if Richlands can pull this off....

16-7

While I am a Union fan, I can assure you that Union is not overlooking the Blue Tornado. Way too much respect between the two teams to assume you have an easy "W."

This has the making for a great battle all the way to the end. If anyone in the state wants to visit Bullitt Park on Friday and witness two very good teams and a raucous crowd, this will be your chance. Wow, what a first round matchup!

Not your normal 1 v 8 matchup. I think if Richlands plays a more typical 2A schedule, they end up around 7-3 and in a 4-5 seed with a possible host game.

This game is too close to call for many reasons. My gut says Richlands by a hair.

Richlands is definitely better than their record would indicate. Both defenses are good. It comes down to which offense makes the fewest mistakes.

I know that Richlands will see a different Union team than they saw in week #2, and it sounds like Richlands will be a different team as well.

Going to be a cold, but exciting game tomorrow night!

Wow, I had not followed Richlands this year, but it sounds as if they must have lost a lot from the team they had last year.

Big rival!! Will be a great atmosphere this should be.

Rooting for the underdog in this one.

They did, but they've also had a BRUTAL schedule. The teams they lost to are a combined 55-5.

One loss was in OT, another in the last minute. Could very easily be 6-4.

They lost their 2x state player of the year QB, their top 4 receivers - 2 of which were all state, an all state TE/DE, & their best running threat (who was one of the 4 receivers who played RB too).

They have excellent line play and a great defense but they don't have the playmakers on offense this year to go with them. If you take out the Lebanon game (who was probably the worst team in the state in 2a) they haven't scored more than 2 offensive touchdowns in any game all year. But at the same time their defense has kept them in every game going into the 4th quarter. Actually, all of their wins (minus Lebanon) against Gate City, Tazewell, & Virginia High were still competitive games until the 4th qt.

They've lost to 10-0 teams Bluefied, WV & Union --- 9-1 teams Blacksburg, Graham, William Byrd --- and lastly 8-2 Marion.

They're well coached and play hard. They have a sophomore kicker that imo is the best by far in SWVA. They just don't have the home run threats on offense you're used to seeing from Richlands the last 15 years. That being said they're still good enough to upset a team. I doubt they'll go to Union and win, and I wouldn't pick them over Graham in that hypothetical rematch, but I'd pick them as the 8 seed to beat seeds 3-7 in region D if they were to line up right now. It just a shame for them they drew Union first.

As #1 seed it's a shame Union drew Richlands. #1 should be rewarded for being #1.

LOL Very true! I'd like to see Union win because I feel they are have the best shot from Region D to represent at the state level but I'm also holding out for a Richlands win so we can get a thanksgiving weekend rivalry game in Bluefield again.

One more time. Union is a combination of Powell Valley and ??? I forgot, I was in work today and a guy was trying to think of the other school name. He knew about Thomas brothers and I was like I forgot too.

Jones brothers? Thomas and Julius Jones of NFL fame.

Richlands just can’t seem to catch a break this year, heck of a game tho. Union will cruise through region D now

Ehhh, maybe, but there's still 2 teams left in the region that beat Richlands this season. Don't know what happened tonight to discredit Marion or Graham?

See my reply from 10:36 am on Thursday! Richlands left it all on the field last night. If the temperature had not been near or below freezing, I would have bet on the kicker (great leg) making that 43 yard fg at end of game to tie it, but it had to be like kicking a rock!

Richlands had James Mitchell bottled up near sideline, with 2:00 to go, but he somehow fought through and out sprinted the defense for a 65 yd TD run. To take away from whoever said it originally, "great athlete's make great plays."

Congrats to Richlands for making playoffs and fighting to the end. Do not hang your heads!

Union will have their hands full with Marion and definitely with Graham. It wouldn't surprise me to see Graham hosting Marion for the Region Title. Marion avenged their loss to V High and played a good ball game with Graham.

Lot of Union fans looking past both of these teams. Graham has multiple offensive weapons

my bad, yeah, the JONES brothers. Thomas was the first one I thought of and I just typed it real fast. I make so many type Os on this message board due to just typing and hitting reply real quick without proofreading. I stand corrected...yes, the Jones brothers.

At this junction of the season, no one is looking past anyone. GHS, Union has played as well as could be expected. They have essentially changed their offensive strategy with the loss of Bailey Turner. No excuses here, we just prepare well, strap on the chin strap and play the games.

We could have easily been beat last night by a very good Richlands team. We overcame adversity and proceed onto next round.

Everyone is good now! Nothing will be a surprise. Strap on the chinstrap and play the game.

P.S. you will never hear anything negative out of my mouth on here. I will not bash anyone or any team. These young men and schools deserve such.

Not true. Most Union fans I know realize we will be in a dog fight w Marion and would be lucky to beat Graham if we play.
