I'm sure longtime will be by with his always great report a little later on

At your service.........The first detail I can report is that the Gladiators rushed for over 200 yards tonight.........

..........in the first quarter, which gives you an idea of how quickly this one got out of hand and how thoroughly they dominated it. But how is this for another quirky statistic? The Indians probably controlled the first quarter time of possession by at least a 9 minute to 3 minute margin.

So how did all of that happen you may ask? Well it is spelled CCC. That is of course Cayden Cook Cash, the Big Red's all-state running back, who started the scoring by zipping right up the middle almost untouched from about 55 yards on the third RHS play from scrimmage. However, prior to that, the Indians had taken the opening kickoff and run off 6 1/2 minutes before being stopped on downs.

Therefore that first Riverheads scoring drive took only 56 seconds. But if you think that was a short drive, wait until you hear about Triple C's NEXT scoring run!

After stopping the Fort again, the Gladiators were pinned deep on a punt that the Indians downed somewhere around the one. So on the first play from scrimmage, there was what looked to be a routine dive play just designed to get out from the shadow of the goal line. But all of a sudden, CCC burst out of the middle of a huge pile and turned on the jets. For the last 60 yards of the 98-99 yard run, the nearest defenders were trailing him by at least 30 yards.

Which made the next sequence all the more puzzling. Even though there seemed to be little doubt that the touchdown was going to count, a penalty of some kind that was never fully explained was called on Riverheads. It could not have been a block in the back or a hold because if so, the TD would not have counted. Yet they marked off 15 yards against RHS on the ensuing kickoff. If anyone has any inside information on what really happened, inquiring minds would like to know!

By the end of the first quarter, the Gladiators had the ball back and were driving toward their third TD of the game. That would be scored on the opening play of the second quarter on about a 15 yard run by fullback Cody Cash (Double C maybe?), who had been injured in the first quarter but quickly re-entered the game.

His score made it 21-0 and from that point, things went a bit haywire for the Indians. They fumbled away consecutive kickoffs and RHS took one of them in for a score, which came on a 4th down pass from Bennett Dunlap to Austin Roberts. Making matters worse, the Indians were called for an Unsportsmanlike Conduct for protesting that score.

However the home team did have two things go in their favor before the half ended. They got on the board with about a 30 yard QB draw that made the score 28-7, and then they stopped Riverheads on the 1, with just a few seconds left to prevent the Gladiators from taking a four-TD lead in to the locker room.

But the Gladiators erased any hopes of a second half comeback when they scored on the opening possession, with Double C getting the honors. Later in the quarter, Luke Bryant, who is about as tough to bring down as Triple C, scored his only TD of the game.

The Indians scored before the quarter was out on a nice TD pass that made it 35-14 at the time but Bryant's score plus an early fourth-quarter bootleg by Dunlap gave us the final score and more importantly, started the running clock, a feature Gladiator fans have not gotten to see as much this year as they normally do.

In addition to the aforementioned TD pass from Dunlap to Roberts, the Gladiators had another crowd-pleasing pass play tonight as Australian transfer student Caleb Weston hauled in a beautiful 30 yarder back in the second quarter. Word on the street is that he is popular with his fellow students and may help out the Gladiator basketball team this winter.

With this win, RHS is now the only team unbeaten in Shenandoah District play after Buffalo Gap handed Staunton its first loss tonight. Meanwhile Stuarts Draft handled Wilson surprisingly easily, and still has just the one district loss. If Riverheads hopes to capture the league crown, they will have to defeat both Staunton and Stuarts Draft in the final two games and at this stage, each one of them only has one district loss. Bottom line, the race is far from over and could still go any number of ways.

Great crowd on hand and congrats to all the Fort Seniors who were honored tonight. I take that to mean that their final two games against SD and BG will each be on the road.

Rhs young and small defense is playing better each week and making less penalties, and CCC is starting to get healthy, that 99 yard td has to be a school record, beep beep beep

Bama , you and Jer must have got to the game early. I wanted to catch up with you but I could not make it all the way to the other side . I just hugged the fence on the Blue side . Hope to see you next game ! Gladiators better clean things up when they play a good team . BONE HEAD Mistakes ! jmo

I would have to agree with Bama on this point........the Big Red seemed more poised and focused in this one and although there were a few penalties, none of them were of the real annoying variety. I would still like to know about the one called during Triple C's 99 yard TD run. Anyone have any idea what that was all about?

@longtimerhsfan Does anyone have Luke Bryant And Cayden Cash Yards and Tds On the Season total ?

The Harrisonburg paper prints those stats once a week. I will try to remember to note them this week and post something on here.

If TD counted, and it was 15 marked off on KO, then a personal foul or unsportsmanlike

I have been informed today by a statistician for the game that a Riverheads player who was trailing CCC's big run flashed a peace sign at a Fort player as they were running down the field. Apparently the ref deemed that to be taunting and that is supposed to be a point of emphasis this year.

If it was before he scored why would the TD count?

I had the same question. I can think of very few times I have ever seen a penalty called on the offensive team but yet the score still counted. But it is water under the bridge now. I am just glad to have finally learned something about it.
