The Gladiators hosted their second scrimmage tonight as they welcomed the Class 3 Little Giants into the Red Pride gym. Waynesboro technically won both the four-quarter and the two-quarter scrimmage, but they each went down to the wire.
In the first one, RHS came out blazing, both from three point range and by consistently beating the slower Giants down the court on fast breaks. The Big Red led 22-10 after one quarter and stretched it to as much as 21 points in the second period.
But then I "think" the Giants pulled a fast one on us and inserted someone in the line-up that had not played in the first half. I could be mistaken, since I don't know their players, but this guy (wearing number 2 tonight) was clearly their best athlete. He led them on a comeback as they outscored the Big Red 37-13 in the second half to pull out a 54-47 win.
The second scrimmage, just two quarters, ended up with Waynesboro winning 26-24, but in all fairness to the Gladiators, they played the last four minutes with a line-up that essentially featured last year's JV team. In fact, RHS was short-handed tonight anyway, as last year's leading scorer was out of town, and three football players are still practicing for Coach Casto. So that left them with only five varsity players and four JV kids dressed out tonight.
Without knowing anything about Waynesboro or its expectations this year, it looked like a good overall showing from RHS as they were sharp from outside but also spent most of the second half working on back-door cuts, many of which caught the Giants sleeping.
I assume this is it for scrimmages until the football season wraps up and we get those guys back. If I remember correctly, last year we played our last football game on Saturday and started basketball the following Thursday or Friday.
